But theism is a particular kind of belief. Not every unevidenced or
supernatural entity* is a god, and not every supernatural or
unevidenced belief is theism.
So....It's got to be a specific type of "god" (that
you don't believe in) to be an atheist?
No, he said that unevidenced belief in aliens doesn't make
one a theist. And it doesn't.
If your "god" is an alien it *does*.
Obviously you need to re-think your position, as it is wrong.

True, but since there's no evidence he meant it that way (as
can be seen by the quote above: "Not every unevidenced or
supernatural entity* is a god"; note the word "or") he's
correct.
Obviously you need to re-think your position, as it is wrong.
No, it isn't, since I understand English. Sorry.

Thanks, Bob, and thanks, Iain. I'm glad my point, obvious though I
found it, wasn't lost on others.
HVAC: Much as my troll-o-meter is twitching at your latest posts in
sci.skeptic, you haven't gone in the killfile yet. And since you
don't seem to understand what I and the other two people are saying:
People believe in all sorts of unevidenced things. Some of those
things are supernatural entities, and many of those entities are not
considered gods in any way - ghosts, or more generally 'spirits of the
dead' would probably be the most common.
And that's why I called ***** on your statement, "Anyone who
believes in ***** that doesn't exist is a theist." I think you would
agree with me that ghosts fall into the category of "***** that doesn't
exist".
There are a couple of ways you could attack this. You could point out
that most of the people who believe in ghosts also believe in god(s).
True but irrelevant. They're theists because of the latter belief,
not the former. You could also quibble about the difference between
ghosts and gods, or even point out how ancestor-worship blurs the
lines. To which I'd reply that the fuzzy area between the two doesn't
mean the beliefs are not generally seperable.
If you want to pursue this conversation, I've set follow-ups to
alt.atheism and sci.skeptic. And I'd thank you to be patient, as I
can't read or post every day.
