I wish to protest about Jerry Springer The Opera |
I wish to protest about Jerry Springer The Opera on BBC2 last night. Multiple
evangelical organisations and Christian churches promised that I would be
grossly offended and insulted by thousands of gratuitous uses of the F-word and
C-word. I counted only 378 instances of the F-word and a mere 12 of the C-word!!
Much of the dialog was diluted by softer words such as the A-word, the S-word
and the J-word, which I only find mildly offensive when used outside of a
blasphemous context. While there were some suitably blasphemous scenes, such as
Eve attempted to give the silk diaper clad Jesus a hand job, these were not
sufficient to cause moral outrage on my part.
I feel extremely let down by this. How am I supposed to vent my righteous
indignation when this show so clearly failed to live up to the standards of
dirtiness we have come to expect of BBC2.
I demand that Jerry Springer The Opera be made more filthy and offensive
immediately so that I can calmy protest that "I don't believe in censorship, but
this show should be BANNED!!!"

That's right! I think alt.atheism should start a film editing organization,
"DirtyFucks," in which we place foul language, gratuitous sex scenes, and
hard core violence into movies and rent them out to make them more
offensive. Or offensive in the first place. Actually, I the "The Passion of
the Christ" would take on a whole new meaning with this extra footage (or
inchage), and I might actually watch it.

If you multiply the f word by both when it was sung in chorus (that'll
be 20 or so for each f word and also there is a bit where the devil and
Jesus are doing a duet where jesus is going fu-fu-fu-fu - do they
count?
Having seen it live and on Tv I can say I too was moraly outraged that
my morals where not challenged and that I was not left with the
feeling, on either occasion with a sence that the world is going to
hell in a hand cart.
Other acts of art that also did not outrage me include Dogma, Father
Ted and The Life of Brian. I do occasional feel outraged by unaccurate
charactisation of athiest on though of the day on radio 4 and am
considering a banning of christmas because of the stress, hardship and
torment it bring to hunderds of thousands each year. It's not even the
proper birthday of jesus but a hijacking of a pagan festival.

They multiplied the number of swear words by the number of singers who

It's like the way the Christers tried to get "Married With Children" taken

twenty copies and sign a different name on each, to exagerate the "outraged

They're still at it but with web forms now. Don't know if you've heard
about the flaps over here (you know, like the Great Nipple Holocaust) but
it turns out they're almost universally *fabricated now by the fundies.
Utterly made up.
I'd have to dig up the article now but a guy used the Freedom of
Information Act to force the FCC to disgorge the actual complaints it
received for one of the more (in)famous flaps (IIRC, it was that stupid
"Married by America" show on Fox for which the *largest fine against a
television network has been levied).
Turned out, there were actually *three* unique complaints. Ninety
something *forms submitted online by apparently two dozen people.
Out of a nation of 280 *MILLION* people. TWO apparently complained on
their own. A tiny group of fundies generated *all the rest of the
complaints.
For this, Fox was fined $1.2 million dollars...

Much of the dialog was diluted by softer words such as the A-word, the
S-word and the J-word, which I only find mildly offensive when used
outside of a blasphemous context. While there were some suitably
blasphemous scenes, such as Eve attempted to give the silk diaper clad
Jesus a hand job, these were not sufficient to cause moral outrage on my
part.
I feel extremely let down by this. How am I supposed to vent my righteous
indignation when this show so clearly failed to live up to the standards
of dirtiness we have come to expect of BBC2.
I demand that Jerry Springer The Opera be made more filthy and offensive
immediately so that I can calmy protest that "I don't believe in
censorship, but this show should be BANNED!!!"
I hope you sent that in.

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what
that reality is. It is a crucial act of independent thinking to be
skeptical of someone else's description of reality.'-

You could have banned it if you wished. You television has such a
censorship device. It is called the on/off switch. You choose to watch
it as is your right I choose not to watch it. I turned it off because
I thought it was junk TV and do not care for the F and C words either
they do not amuse me.
If I thought for one moment that somebody like you thought I should
not be allowed to decide for myself whether or not to watch it or not
I would be out on the streets protesting.
How dare you try to take on responsibility for what I am allowed to
watch.
