A few stray thoughts, I hope you'll bear with me.
Now the divergent factions of Christians are themselves splitting down
the middle, one group claiming to speak for all Christians and one group
claiming the first group does not speak for them. It's only a matter of
time before the hard-liners in the Christian Reicht begin pointing the
finger at more moderate-to-liberal Christians and declaring straight from
the pulpits that they're all Hellbound Satan Spawn.
The Christian identify is being highjacked by some of its own. Which is
only fitting, because Christianity itself highjacked the Jewish identity.
Now every Christian man, woman and child - whether or not they shared any
ancestors in common with any living Jew - views the pre-Christian Jewish
history as their own. It is not their own, it belongs to the Jews. For
most modern Christians - at least in the U.S. & Europe - _their_
religious heritage is Odin, Cerridwen, Rhiannon, Isis, Persius... Not
Allah, not Yahweh, nor even Ramses or Set. I'm not all that familiar
with aboriginal gods or I might name some of them as well.
Point being that I suspect more moderate-to-liberal Christians in today's
United States are getting a taste of what the Jews of old went through
when Christianity ceased being a fringe sect of Judaism and turned into
an entity unto itself, a force to be reckoned with - a force that claimed
to be the fulfillment of the Judaic religion and thus, a force that
claimed ownership of Jewish history whether or not those so claiming had
ever even seen a Jew. The new Religious Reicht is clearly becoming a
religion independent of mainstream Christianity. I think a shakeup is
coming in the various Christian sects in the not-too-distant future, at
least for the U.S. It may even be something as bloody as the Catholics &
Protestants in Ireland, though obviously with different causes.
This isn't just about this one election, I could learn to live with that.
It's a whole plethora of things, trends that have been emerging ever
since I can remember (and I remember learning how to walk, so that was
pretty early on). I fear no longer for my country, for now my country's
_become_ my fear. Such a wretched state ought never be.
"Brother against brother, father against son..."
"I come not to bring peace, but a sword..."
<sigh> :-( Whether there was any actual man behind the Jesus myth or
not, that's _one_ promise that's come true. Constantly. Over and over
and over again... "The Prophecy That Keeps Going"... "The Energizer
Messiah"... "Spiritual Viagra"... "necrohippoflagellation"... and on and
on and on it goes...
