Object: Idiotic over-reaction to hurricane Isabel
I live in upstate New York. Last week, my kids' had school cancelled
because of the approach of hurricane Isabel. Perhaps the people in charge
of such decisions are unaware that the hurricane made landfall in North
Carolina, several hundred miles away? Or that hurricanes lose their power
when no longer over water? Or is everyone so paranoid about liability
that they figured it was worth it to avoid the infintessimal chance that
it might actually do some damage here? As it was, we got about 5 minutes
of rain.

I live in upstate New York. Last week, my kids' had school cancelled
because of the approach of hurricane Isabel.

When I was reading the school closing lists they were principally concentrated
in three counties: Cattaraugus, Allegany and Steuben. Those counties were
already trying to recover from heavy flooding and the predicted path of the
hurricane was going to go right over them. In some instances the precaution was
justified. Had the Southern Tier not already been heavily flooded before the
hurricane warning I don't think they would have bothered.
Remember, this is an area which doesn't close schools when we get a foot or
more of snow.

Being originally from Bflo, I was amazed at the precations taken
here in Atlanta...with even a rumor of snow, they close the schools...
more often then not it turns out to be a bright, beeyootiful day...
Of course when it does snow-melt-freeze, all of us idiot Northerners
drive around like the roads are coated in an inch of salt like up
north.

If you want to see overreacting, you should try the philadelphia area when it
snows. After 10 years lliving in Rochester and 3 years in Massena, NY, we get
a good laugh every winter!

You know, it's funny. Hurricanes are pretty strange events. Isabel, when
it hit us, was 700 miles across and here in Greensboro, we got about 3
inches of rain. The wind hit a top speed of about 30 mph, and the power
went out for about a half million folks, even though we never got to
tropical storm strength wind.
I'd say it's better to feel sheepish about over reacting to weather than
to risk losing kids in a flood or a tree-fall.
