If the Internet is "The Beast", does that make Al Gore the Anti-Christ? |
I'd mused on this before, thought I'd put it out there to stir up a
fundit or two. The case for the "WWW" being "The Beast":
This one relies on the use of American English and American Sign
Language: The ASL sign for the letter "W" and the ASL sign for the
number "6" are nearly identical, with many speakers of ASL it's
often signed in a _totally_ identical fashion. The Internet - aka
the "World Wide Web", aka "WWW" - can thus also be taken in ASL to
be "666".
There is mention in some tribulationist literature that unless they
accept the mark, people will be unable to participate in the world
economic market. Well, it doesn't look like we'll ever _quite_ be
there, but then again with the continued rise of financial
transactions taking place over the Internet, it's probably very
soon going to be like photo-ID - we've come to rely upon them so
completely, there are many things you simply cannot do without one.
While the web isn't quite there yet, it's not at all inconceivable
that one day, it will be.
"The Beast" and "The Antichrist" in much Christian end-times
literature are not actually one and the same. The Antichrist
"awakens" The Beast, but is not himself The Beast. Having said
that, I'm sure you can figure out the meaning behind my question up
there in the subject line. ;-) If you _don't_ know, well, Al Gore
mis-spoke one time and claimed to have invented the Internet. So
if the Internet is The Beast, it would only follow that Al Gore
would be the Antichrist.
Really, though, we all know that Al Gore did nothing of the sort.
At least I _hope_ we do. This then would lead to the question, "So
who 'awoke' the Internet?" My money's on Bill Gates. The Internet
never would have come into its own without the rapid advancement of
both the popularity and technology of the computer. Had Bill Gates
never existed and no one single person managed to have the same
impact, I guesstimate that it could easily have taken decades
longer for the information age to reach its present stage of
development.
Just some thoughts. I'm playing with this like I'm taking it
seriously. Anyone care to join me in making connections between
our present era and some of the more common Christian "end times"
mythos?
