If You're Going to Call Yourself a Christian, Act Like One! |
It's all right here in this forum. You have people arguing over whether
Hitler was a Christian or not. You have Christians declaring that Atheists
are "evil." You have Christians exhibiting disgust and disdain - even
towards agnostics! You have at least one Christian warning teenagers to stay
away from this forum and insinuating that this place is a hotbed of violence
and murder. (I *do* understand that the dude is a little off in his
thinking, but the same basic sentiment is expressed, albeit in other forms,
by other Christian visitors to the forum as well.) This has led some forum
members to openly wonder: "Just what in the Hell *is* a Christian? I've
often told belligerent Christians, "If you're going to call yourself a
Christian, act like one!" Being a bit of a belligerent myself, I find it
astonishing to see how hostile, hateful, and mean-spirited Christians can
be. Isn't such behavior the very antithesis of Christian thinking?

<snip to>
At some point the Christian community is going to have to sit down a=
nd
make out some sort of universal guidelines by which "all" Christians
would
have to abide by or else get drummed out of chuch on one's ear.
You're kidding, right?
At this point in time, the word Christian is meaningless. It stands
for
nothing! All sorts of vile people (includin g members of the KKK) s=
it
under it's umbrella. Till then, I'l l just keep treating Christians=
the
way I have in recent times: with contempt. (Oh, before some other
forum
member goes goofy with it, there *are* no guidelines by which Athei=
sts
must abide. I, for one, am just trying to b e a "good" person in the
best
sense possible sense of the word. I am a "moral" atheist.
Greywolf
Greywolf, I am a Christian, I say to you that there is no specific and
identifiable moral code by which Christia ns must abide that is not ar=
gued
about by other Christians.
I have seen, right here in AA, atheists who claim that simply BEING
atheist
confers upon the non-believer some sort of magical logical faculties,
some
superio r moral code, that would, if all people would just join this
non-belief, solve all the world's ills.
I don't believe you have seen any such thing. I challenge
you to produce a single example of this. Just one. You
know you can't do i t. You are blatantly false witnessing
and doing so on the Sabbath. Never mind that it is in
the service of you changing the subject to atheists.
Are you doing this to demonstrate your contempt
for your religion?
(sigh) How many do you want? Will one do?
Sure!
Would you prefer four or more?
Even better!
If
I produce ONE, would you accept it or would you pick it apart to somehow
prove that the writer didn't REALLY say what he did say?
Just show me one or four:
Who says simply BEING atheist confers upon the
non-believer some sort of magical logical faculties.
Who says simply BEING atheist confers upon the
non-believer some superior moral code
Who says if all people would just join this
non-belief, solve all the world's ills.
However, just for you, I gave myself a three minute time limit to find on=
e,
just one, quote from an atheist saying that atheists are superior,
Already you are weaseling out of what you said?
Would you like to change your accusation now?
Or just pretend you said something other than
what you did?
have a
better moral or ethical code, or something similar. So I entered a couple=
of
search words (atheist, superior) into google, and voila', the first thing=
I
find is a whole thread with the title "Why True atheists are far superior=
to
any theist". .
But I bet you still didn't find anyone who said what
you claimed.
...oh, and a quote by someone named 'funboy' who described an incident in
which he was shot at in a convenience store: "btw, what really amazed me =
was
how quickly i realized the situation, how
quickly i reacted & how clear & purposeful my thoughts were throughout
the whole ordeal
looking back on it, i feel that if i was a xtian, i would have frozen & b=
een
shot dead " As in, being an atheist was what kept him alive, whereas bei=
ng
a theist would have killed him. (shrug)
Not even close to what you said, is it? You seem to be
having a problem admitting it.
As for "contempt for my religion"...far from it. I admire Christians who
honestly work at BEING Christian...who strive to be better people. I'm ju=
st
quite aware that being Christian doesn't automatically elevate one to the
level of alien being, or saint....a Christian is a person JUST LIKE YOU.
But atheists are people who make wild claims like "simply
BEING atheist confers upon the non-believer some sort of
magical logical faculties"
With all the same worries, the same problems, the same situations to deal
with, and exactly the same temptations. JUST like you.
Now, you, an atheist, may say to me that 'atheism' means only a lack of
belief in god, and thus atheists are not bound by a specific moral
code...and that I, a theist, have no right to expect atheists to abide=
by
any set of ethical codes, no matter who tells me that there is such a
code.
Yet you do not see the irony in your own expectations here; the ONLY =
thing
that all Christians have in common is that they identify with the tea=
chings
of one Jesus Christ in some form or another,
So a Christian is someone who identifies with the teachings
of Jesus in some form or another...
I think that all Christians would agree with that. They couldn't exactly
call themselves CHRISTians if they didn't identify one way or another with
the teachings of Jesus CHRIST, now, would they?
There is a fundamental difference between a necessary
condition and a sufficient one.
Whatever it is they think
they are.
and do so strongly enough to
think of themselves AS Christian.
...and call themselves Christian? And you get this
definition...where?
From the dictionary, actually.
Chris=B7tian (krschn)
1. One who professes belief in Jesus as Christ or follows the religion ba=
sed
on the life and teachings of Jesus.
2. One who lives according to the teachings of Jesus.
And you say this means the same thing as "someone
who identifies with the teachings of Jesus in some
form or another and do so strongly enough to think
of themselves AS Christian?"
Not even a nice try.
When you get down to what exactly those
teachings ARE, though....that's a matter for intense debate.
And I thought "God" was not the author of confussion.
Odd.
It seem s like a simple enough definition to me.
Why should it be a matter for intense debate what,
exactly, those teachings are? Get it now?
And people do
not agree.
So I, a theist, may say to you that you have no right to expect
Christians
to abide by a specific set of ethical and moral codes that YOU have s=
et
up
for them.
No right? On the contrary, I think he has every right
to do that if it suits him.
OK....he has no right to figure that anybody would agree with him,
especially the Christian he may be talking to at the moment. ;-)
The most you can do, for anybody (atheist OR theist) is attempt to
figure out what the specific ethical code is that that person is suppo=
sed to
abide by, and then watch to see if their actions reflect the code THEY
claim. Not the one you claim for them.
So Hitler was perfectly acceptable to you huh.
Oh, goodie, the Hitler card.....
Nice dodge. You beg the Hitler question when you say
something as silly as claiming consistency is the only
thing you can judge about someones moral code.
Look. "Christian" is a classification of belief, not a moral judgment.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
faithfullness, gentleness, self control...
-- Galatians 5:22-23
There
are a whole BUNCH of Christians that are not good people, and whose actio=
ns
are 'not acceptable' to any person of sanity. There are a whole bunch of
atheists one can say the same thing about. Calling someone a Christian is
not confering sainthood upon him; it's simply giving a hint as to what he
SAYS he believes.
Well I'll go by what the Bible says, if you don't mind.
So you treat Christians with contempt....and you have a real problem, I
suppose, when Christians lump all atheists together and call them all
immoral and unethical....and I'll bet the irony of that just whoo shes
right
over you.
Attacking others won't make your argument look any
better. Neither will changing the subject to atheists
whenever you don't wish an issue be discussed.
I wasn't doing any attacking here.
Sure you were.
You were.
I wasn't giving you hell. I told the truth and you
thought it was hell.
Notice; you called ME a liar,
Did you say that you've seen atheists:
Who say simply BEING atheist confers upon the
non-believer some sort of magical logical faculties?
Who say simply BEING atheist confers upon
the non-believer some superior moral code?
Who say if all people would just join this
non-belief, solve all the world's ills?
not vice versa, you used argumentum ad Nazium fallacy,
No such fallacy, dear. I think you just false witnessed
again.
I didn't, and you are
raising the strawman here, I didn't.
Any more false accusations you want to toss out,
no evidence necessary? And for what? Just so you
won't appear to be wrong?
Get a grip.=20
Better advice for you, methinks

However, it's a question you should answer, too. What is a Christian
supposed to act like?
I understand your confusion. The NT contains the supposed sayings of Jesus
as to a follower's action. It also contains the supposed sayings of Paul
of Tarsus which almost everytime contradict the supposed sayings of Jesus.
To add further to the confusion the OT contradicts them both.

Aw, heck, everybody knows that wasn't Jesus. I mean, think about
it: unspeakable cruelty, casual comfort manipulating evil demons,
using cloven-footed horned beasts with tails. No /way/ was that
the work of the Love God. It was Satan. Had to be.

That probably wouldn't be a bad interpretation except for the fact that the
closest the town got to the water was over 20 miles away, and the swine
would have to pass over a mountain range which was still about 12 miles
away, and still there was no cliff at the water for them to fall over as
the story portrays. The story was written by someone who knew nothing of

Good for you! Only a relatively few of the faithful are even aware of this
little nugget of information. The Matthean manuscripts variously depict the
story of the "Gerasene Demonic" as having taken place in, or about, the
city of either, "Gerasa," "Gadara," "Gergesa" - or in the case of one
manuscript, "Gergusta." Of course that matters little to a fundie, but I
found it amusing to learn that at least one conservative scholar declared
that the a city unearthed by archeologists named "Kesa" was the actual site
of the "pig dive." It certainly fit all the requirements of the story. The
problem, however, is that not *one* of the ancient Matthean manuscripts
even mentions the town.

I can see you never read the Gospels. "Jesus" is hostile, hateful and
mean-spirited.

liberal propaganda - you're an atheist, rely on the evidence and read

"He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first."
The notion of "sin" is degrading. And this verse is against the notion
of judgment, which is necessary for living in society. It's just more
of the non-existant "Jesus"' slave/slaveholder-mentality. "You damn
sinners should shut the ***** up and let God do the judging".
"Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who
hate you."
You don't find that utterly ridiculous ? Do you find it reasonable to
do good to people who hate you ? Do you give awards to mass murderers ?
Once again, another verse against judgment. Another verse against man's
mind and man's life.
Is this the best you can do, "Jesus"-lover ?

The notion of "sin" is degrading.
To everyone? Because? Regardless, "degrading" isn't
what you previously stipulated.
And this verse is against the notion
of judgment, which is necessary for living in society. It's just more
of the non-existant "Jesus"' slave/slaveholder-mentality. "You damn
sinners should shut the ***** up and let God do the judging".
This is your professional opinion?
"Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who
hate you."
You don't find that utterly ridiculous ? Do you find it reasonable to
do good to people who hate you ? Do you give awards to mass murderers ?
Once again, another verse against judgment. Another verse against man's
mind and man's life.
And yet it isn't "hostile, hateful and mean-spirited." Did you forget?
Is this the best you can do, "Jesus"-lover ?
LOL! So much for rational thought.

I can see you never read the Gospels. "Jesus" is hostile,
hateful and mean-spirited.
How about this:
"He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her
first."
Or this one:
Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those
who hate you."
How interesting, Del, that you, a self-professed atheist, should
come to the defense of Jesus. And this despite Jesus proclaiming
the Gospel that all who don't believe him are condemned to
eternal torture. And despite Jesus proclaiming, in the Sermon
on the Mount, the inerrancy of the Pentateuch and all its
vile corruption. And despite Jesus giving his tacit approval
to slavery. And despite Jesus going on a rampage outside the
temple. And despite Jesus torturing and slaughtering a herd of
pigs for no good reason. And despite Jesus cursing a fig tree,
again for no good reason.
Fascinating, really.

think to create some figs instead of killing the tree. One wonders
how even a staunch atheist like Del could have overlooked

It does bring up an interesting question: since Jesus cursed the

Jesus? And, if so, why didn't the tree bless Jesus with some
fruit? Most curious.
Del, care to help us out on this one?

It's fine to joke, Greywolf, but why do you think the Bible is so great
? Can you give ONE good verse from the Bible ? I don't think you can. I
have never seen any.
The message of Christianity is : stop thinking and have faith, you're
going to Hell, slavery and rape are AOK, morality is the word of a
genocidal and maniacal god, other people are either saved or unsaved,
anyone who doesn't obey God's laws should suffer a terrible death and
suffer eternally.
You think the Christian worldview is a great way to see other people ?
Why ?

Wow! I happened to come back to this thread thinking it was dead. Well,
after re-reading some of my remarks and seeing some of the responses, I see
its time to address some of them.
You just made me realize that I *have* held up the Bible as some kind of
great book. I also now realize I was "conditioned" to do so only because of
my religious upbringing. In fact the bible is just what it is: a book. There
*is* nothing "Holy" about it. I have to re-condition my mind to think more
clearly and ignore the subconscious brain-washing I was exposed to when I
refer to it.
I think you intuitively know what I mean when I speak of "good"
Christians. You've met 'em. The problem though, is as nice as some of them
are, they are still the "enemy." The hardcore Christian won't even allow for
the *possibility* that they're wrong. That disturbs me to no end. How can
you have a meeting-of-the-minds when they are incapable of meeting you
half-way? They simply are incapable of rational thought and that's sad.
As far as a good passage in the Bible: there is *too* one. In his Sermon
on the Mount, Jesus, by implication, tells his followers not to pray in
Public Schools! (Read Mt. 6:5-6 with that thought in mind.)

<snip to>
Whether or not one believes that it is divine, or without error, it's
certainly more than just 'a book'. Even if one is atheist and sees no
evidence in it for the existence of God, it's considerably more than 'just a
book'....because so many people are influenced by it. So much literature, so
much history, just....so much.
A year or so ago I was in a class studying the Pearl poet, a medieval
writer. Three quarters of the students in the class had not read the bible;
and if you are going to read anything in old English, you had better have
some notion of what's in the bible. Two of them were complaining to me that
they weren't Christian or religious and didn't see why they had to read the
bible; it was abrogating their religious right to not be religious. I asked
them why they were literature majors, if they were so dead set on NOT
reading the one most influential literary work in the western world...
No, as long as people consider the bible to be divinely inspired, and use
it, and allude to it, and write about it, it's not 'just a book'. Doesn't
matter whether it actually IS divinely inspired.

Thank you for realizing what I was talking about. I admire your will to
break free from this indoctrination. If only more people were like you.
You give the following verses as "good" :
Mt. 6:5-6
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to
pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by
men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your
Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in
secret, will reward you.
That last part is complete stupidity, you do realize that ? That aside,
I agree that this is a good part, except insofar as it encourages
prayer. Let's just say it's debatable. But you found what seems to be
the least conscionable verse anyone has ever given me so far.

I was being totally facetious. One thing I will show over time is that I
*am* an Atheist and an *ardent* one (as opposed to a *hardcore*) one at
that. I consider myself to be a moderate and a moral atheist even though I
am often supremely sarcastic in my remarks. Often times it appears I am
exhibiting my "religion.* I have no religion. And, on occasion, I will
appear to side with a Christian. But that is usually *only* on a point or
two. I temper my remarks if need be only to show respect to an individual
that I feel is worthy of it. But getting back to Matthew 6:5-6: The reason I
chose that passage is because I am vehemently opposed to prayer in public
schools. This passage completely goes against that notion and, moreover, it
is based on the authority of none other than Jesus himself. *That* is why I
indicated it was a "good" passage. And the prayer-in-school-group have it
all wrong. There is no one to stop children from praying in school. All
little Janie or Johnnie need do is silently bow their heads (and fold their
hands if they want to) and pray. They're not going to be shipped off to some
concentration camp if they do. All they have to do is remember to do it "in
secret" and not disrupt the class. But that's a subject for another time.

I'll give you one--but with the caveat that, in isolation, it's
worse than useless. And what it must be surrounded with to become
fully good is not to be found in the Bible (at least, not that I'm
aware of).
Luke 6:11 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to
them likewise.
If you /first/ start with the premise that it is worng to do unto
others that which they do not wish to have done unto them (except
in defense of self or other), then the Golden Rule is a good
premise to follow. End it with the Wiccan Rede--``an it harm none,
do what thou will''--and you've got a simple moral code that I've
yet to find somebody disagree with.
A /bit/ more formalized:
The First Rule: do not do things to others that they do not wish
you to do to them.
The One Exception: you may take such action as is necessary
against a person's will /only/ to the /minimum/ extent necessary
to prevent that person from acting against another's will.
The Second Rule: so long as it does not violate the First Rule (in
accord with the Exception), do things for others that you would
want them to do for you.
The Third Rule: so long as it does not violate the First Rule (in
accord with the Exception) or cause harm to you or others, do
whatever the hell you damn well please.
