Here's the thing - it *is* possible for War of the Worlds
(the upcoming movie) to be a rip-off of Independence
Day. Just because Spielberg's movie has the same title
as Well's novel doesn't necessarily mean it won't be
more similar to Emmerich's movie, even if Emmerich's
movie was inspired by Well's novel as well.
We'll just have to watch the movie and see. :-)

Regarding WotW, I still prefer the radio play. At a time

many films and TV today still don't have.

Pardon me dropping in a note; but there is actually no hard evidence
that the cult of Mithras existed before around 70 AD. And it can be
shown to borrow traits from other pagan deities. So, while there is no
evidence that Mithraists borrowed from Christians -- there really are
no non-trivial parallels anyway, despite what you may have read -- it's
quite unsafe to presume the opposite, as many do.

Perhaps you should consult non-Christian sources before commenting on
other religions, and it is necessary to be aware that Europe, where the
cult of Mithras did not take hold until around 100CE, is not the entire
world. Mithra/Mitra long pre-dates Christianity.
Please check an encyclopedia, Cumont's _Mysteries of Mithras_ or any
reputable work not prepared by Christian apologists. If you prefer
online sources for some reason, here are two to get you started:
http://www.iranian.com/History/Sept97/Mitra/
When the Aryan tribes swept down from the Russian steppes they brought
their gods with them. Some time between 2000 and 1500 B.C.E., these
tribes entered India and Iran, bringing with them one particular deity.
These people, the Mitanni, gave us the first written reference to Mitra
in a treaty between themselves and the Hittites. Signed about 1375
B.C.E., the treaty calls on divine witnesses to pledge its terms. The
Hittites called on the sun go. The Mitanni called on Mitra.
http://www.pantheon.org/articles/m/mithra.html
With the emerging of Zoroastrianism, [Mithra] was reduced to the status
of Yazata. In the Avesta he was portrayed as having ten thousand ears
and eyes, and he rides in a chariot pulled by white horses. In the 4
century BCE his popularity rose and again he held a high position in the
Persian pantheon. Eventually his cult spread beyond Iran and Asia Minor
and gradually became a mystery cult. The ascetic religion of Mithraism
(to which only men were allowed) became increasingly popular among the
Roman soldiers around 100 CE and at that time Mithra was known in Rome
as 'Deus sol invictus' ("the unconquered sun").

Actually I consulted every ancient source in existence, Christian or
otherwise.
Have a look at Manfred Clauss, "The Roman cult of Mithras." This is
the most up-to-date scholarly introduction to the subject.
cult of Mithras did not take hold until around 100CE, is not the entire
world. Mithra/Mitra long pre-dates Christianity.
Modern scholars do not consider the Roman cult of Mithras to have
anything to do with the ancient Persian cult of Ahura-Mitra, tho.
Please check an encyclopedia, Cumont's _Mysteries of Mithras_ or any
reputable work not prepared by Christian apologists.
Cumont is long dead. I suggest you check a modern source.

Nothing to do with Mithras, tho.

There is no evidence of connection between Mithras and Mitra, tho, and
some against; there are no Mithraea -- the distinctive temples of
Mithras -- in Persia.
You might wish to look at the ancient literary sources for yourself,
since you like online sources:
http://www.tertullian.org/rpearse/mithras
But of course you will want to go to the sources yourself and verify
the facts. After all, it is very hard indeed to do any form of
scholarship that does not have something to do with Christians.
All the best,
Roger Pearse

Showing my Age with some atheist TV movie Trivia
The original movie from the early 50s in Technicolor (I remember the
green probe eyes)
Had a younger Gene Barry as the hero' (Dr. Clayton Forrester)
(Barry was from TV shows "Yancy Derringer" and later "Burkes Law")
The special effects and sound were state of the art and very effective
for the time, classic 50's sci fi!

show it was on was "Frontier Playhouse" which also showed
Red Rider and Bob Steele westerns. I think I was five or six

Aww Damm!!

War of the Worlds, remember, is a novel.
And a movie.
And a double album...

me a Communist. Others say that I am a Fascist. But I remain what I have
always been. A Martian. Ooops, what a give-away...!"
