getting at the person going around having unprotected sex. If a person
is responsible, takes precaution, then I see no reason why a person

a couple of gay friends who are HIV positive, and both in relationships, and
both have what they say is a full and satisfying sex life with their

Our researcher found more than 100 websites dedicated to barebacking.
He observed that lot of the people surfing these sites seem to be just
indulging a fantasy. But he did chat online with several men who say
they regularly have bareback sex. They also told him it's happening
more and more in the gay community.
There are men who are turned on by not wearing condoms, but we also
found men who get an even bigger thrill from the risk of getting AIDS.
They seem to want to play the odds in a game of sexual Russian
Roulette.
Not surprisingly, no one was willing to talk to us on camera, until we
found Paul.

hunky muscular guys that almost makes positive living look appealing."

like to have AIDS. He says he's lived through HIV infection and AIDS
vicariously, through his friends: "I see how they live… and they're

Still, he says he doesn't want to become infected. "No No No, I don't
want it, if I did … if I could… If I can avoid it as long as I can, I
will."
Some people might think Paul's crazy, and he doesn't care. "They're
more than welcome to think I'm nuts," he says. "I'm not forcing
anybody to sleep with me bareback. They have too much time on their
hands to judge me… I'm not following what they do in their bedrooms.
I'm taking back my sexual freedom."
In this game of sexual Russian roulette, there's only a crime if you
know you're HIV positive and don't tell your sex partners.
Endangering yourself, it seems, is legal.
"The 'gift giver' and 'bug chaser' idiots... I am one gay man who has
been fighting to survive HIV/AIDS for close to thirteen years ... I
have spent a great deal of that time as a potential poster boy for

Paul gets tested, and so far he's negative.
Bonte says he used to get tested regularly, but lately… "It's a hell
of a week waiting for those results," he complains. "I mean -- could

partly for the thrill and partly because they're tired of a lifetime

want to be HIV positive," it reads.
Phil lives a quite life in a suburb of Atlanta, he's the son of a
minister, a successful accountant for a legal firm. So why does he
want AIDS?
"I'm gay, I'm single, I have no-one," he says. "I'm not close to my
family and I don't want to grow old in a nursing home all by myself
without anyone visiting, caring, you know.
"So it's like its ok if I become positive now… With the way the meds
are, it would be 15 years, maybe 20, who knows? Then I can take
control and decide my fate."
Phil has it all planned - a couple of buddies and medical coverage all
lined up.
Essentially, he's developing a chilling plan to kill himself. He says
he doesn't want to do something more drastic, like suicide, because
"Society doesn't accept that. They just don't understand, whereas if
someone dies of cancer or AIDS, it's more acceptable."
Phil spends hours every night alone on the web, looking for men
willing to infect him with HIV.

Getting positive isn't as easy as Phil first imagined though.
"The internet is a good source to try to meet people, but a lot of
people on the internet are very fantasy oriented and aren't willing to
open up and actually do it."
Phil spends hours every night alone on the web, looking for men
willing to infect him with HIV. And he isn't the only one, we found
dozens of men like him.
"Looking for men to get pozzed in Ottawa" says one. "I'm glad I was
able to participate in converting a young man over the past weekend"
reads another.
They've even got their own lingo… "GWM in midtown seeking to meet
others with the gift. Only serious poz men need respond."
"There are 'gift givers' and 'bug chasers'," Phil explains. "A gift
giver is the one that is HIV and the bug chaser, like I am, is going
after the gift… I don't know where that term came from… [it's] getting
what it takes to be positive.
Phil's had sex with seven or eight men that he knows of who were
positive, but so far no luck. He's even tried injecting himself with
infected blood.
He says when the day comes, when he finally finds out that he is
positive, it will be great news. "Yes, it's what I want. I'll be happy
and celebrate."
