I'm new here. Looking for some good discussions. |
So far, most of the discussions seem like the type of flame war I'd be
expecting. But I'm hoping some good discussion goes on here.
First I'll tell you who I am and why I came to find this group. I
have walked the fence between atheism and theism for years. I have a
lot of friends who are atheists and a lot who are Christians and Jews.
I consider myself, at heart, a scientist. I am always asking
questions, deep questions. After asking enough questions I have come
to the firm conclusion in the last many years that there is, in fact, a
God. I came to this conclusion via science. If anyone's interested
I'll discuss this in a seperate thread. (I can see the flame-war
already on that one) Knowing 99% that there is a God doesn't really
help pick a religion. I decided on Christianty after examining the
various religions out there for some time because it seemed to make the
most logical sense. (at least, the new testament does. The old
testament seems more like metaphorical stories to me)
But I am not here to have a flame-war over Christianity vs. Atheism.
For, believe me, I have argued this within my own mind for many years.
I have realized over the years that Christians are often wrong about
some fundamental things. These very things (like taking the bible
literally, and demanding things like the Earth being a mere 6,000 years
old, etc..) seems to alienate a lot of intelligent people who might
otherwise come to be Christians. Many of these things fundamental
Christians tend to stick to often aren't even found in the Bible and
are only traditions. And unfortunatly we have guys out there like Ted
Haggard, who is a complete idiot, in my opinion. Often people see guys
like him as an example of what a Christian (or a theist in general)
should be like. On the other side we have atheists like Richard
Dawkins who make a complete ***** out of themselves and also try to
distort what religions are by showing examples of extreemists in his
books and videos.
So, where do we find middle gound? From my point of view, atheists
have a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong. So do most
theists. I've tried writing long, boring, essays on the subject to try
to teach both sides something, but rarely will anyone read them. So
I've taken another approach. I am writing a novel about two teenagers
with a time-machine who explore history, in a fun way. They learn a
lot of science and also learn some about religion in the process too.
I'm hoping this will catch on, at some point.
The main goal I want to achieve by participating in this group for a
while is to find out what the general preception is of Christians by
the atheist population. Are they regarded as morons who believe in
fairy-tales and deserve no respect? Are they regarded mostly as good
people who are trying to do good, but are misguided? Obviously there
will be different opinions, but I'm trying to gather up an idea of the
average preception by the average atheist of the average Christian (or
theist) if that can even be accomplished.
Please don't flame me. Know that I express great respect for both
sides of the argument and respect anyone's decision as long as it is
based on good reasons why they believe what they believe.

First off, let me start by saying that it is my opinion that you
don't seem to have really used the scientific method in your analysis of
the bible. If you had, you would have come to the correct conclusion
that both the new and old testaments are made of myth and, if there are
any references to anything real, it is presented in an exaggerated and
twisted way.
The bibles place is in the home and in the church - as is any
religious guidebook. It's presence in any public forum should be limited
to examination and not advocation.
Now, for me personally, my view of xians is similar to my view of
any people. There are assholes, and there are sincerely good people.
What I think makes the religious ***** worse than the non-religious
***** is the fact the religious ***** twists his religion to condone
his/her assholiness. That makes the ***** feel justified in his
assholiness. If you don't believe me, let me try to give you an example:
I offer, for your consideration, the Westboro Baptist Church.
http://www.godhatesfags.com The man in charge of this lovely xian
organization is obviously a complete *****. If he weren't hiding
behind the skirts of the preferred US religion, he would not be in
business - period. Folks would simply not allow his perverted effort to
be successful. Without religion, the guy is just an *****.
Adding religion, the jerk has now convinced himself and some
otherwise independent assholes that have joined him that it is a dutiful
imperative to wipe anything they don't like off the face of the earth. A
mandate from god.
But they are not following any god's direction: They are twisting
their assholiness into god's direction. This is what all religious
people do - no exception.
You pick the church you like. You pick the parts of the bible you
want to be accurate and believe in. You are generally molding your god
into something that you can wear comfortably. If you are an *****,
your god wants the same ***** things you want. If you are a good
person, your god wants the same kind of good things you want.
Anyway, That is my feeling in a nutshell. I could go on, but I am
going to get back to work.
Hope this helps.
God does not exist.

I hate to say it guys. But I have gravely mistaken what I would find
in this group. I was expecting intelligent, open-minded people.
Instead I seem to have found the exact same kind of intolerance and
hatred that atheists normally complain about in religious people.
Okay.. since everyone seems to be critical of my decision of believing
in God for scientific reasons, I doubt any explanation will serve any
positive use here. I can already see with the close-mindedness I've
found here, that if God himself descended from Heaven into your
livingroom you wouldn't believe in him. Instead you'd come up with
some excuse to explain it away. But in case there is even one open
minded person here, I will give a few examples of why I believe in the
existence of God. I can already hear the critizism, but here it is:
Also, I would mention that some of these are just questions, that
remained unanswered. And as crazy as it sounds occum's razor applies
in the favor of a diety.
1) The universe. Where did it come from? It seems to have had a
beginning (the big bang) and no evidence exists that it will ever
definatly have a "big crunch." So it seems illogical for something to
have a beginning without comming from something else.
2) Life. Yes, I believe (mostly) in evolution. However, I have NEVER
seen a convincing case of abiogenesis. You can debate evolution until
you are blue in the face, but where did the first cell come from? I
have heard the standard Athiest answer 1,000 times. It usually
involves some kind of experiment done to create amino acids. Yet, I
found most athiests have accepted that on blind faith and haven't
looked into the details for themselves. WHen I look up these
experiments I find that they are usually failures or inconlusive.
Even if aliens seeded earth, where did the aliens come from? Add to
that, Scientists with all their great knowledge and laboratory
equipment still haven't been able to create a living cell in a lab
without using other living matter as a template. So if it can't even
be recreated, what makes anyone think it could have happened by
accident?
3) Evolution. Evolution is a great theory. I like it. But it lacks
evidence in certain areas. For example, how often do I hear on the the
news about a "missing link." finally being discovered? Way too often.
Yet, it never appears to be the case. The one thing that is made clear
by the theory of evolution is that significant change requires millions
of years. So, if that is the case, why are there these sudden changes
(use humans as a good example) where we can't seem to find the direct
ancestors? And even if we DO find them, there should be millions of
them, not just one or two. This tells me that the change from the
ancient, primative hominids to Humans must have been quick. Far too
quick to be natural. Even so, we have features about us found in no
other animals on the planet (language, morals, etc..) and they are not
easily explained by evolution. When I look at Evolution I see a
drawing board where God was designing his creation. I'm not of the
church who believes God spoke everything into creation. I think it was
a long, tedious design process with many mistakes and discoveries along
the way. The eventual goal being to have design Human beings. I know
atheists won't see it this way. It is sort of like looking at an
antique painting. One person sees one thing, another person looks at
the same painting and sees something else. But, this is what i see.
4) Particles and rules: Everything in the universe obeys a set of
rules. We understand most of them. We can look at a molecule of water
and see how it behaves. We know at what temperature it boils, and when
it freezes. We know what it ways and its properties in chemistry. We
understand why it does what it does because we know that it is made of
2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen. We can go one step down and look at the
oxygen atom. We know what it does. We know its atomic weight, we know
how many electrons are orbiting the nucleus, etc. We understand (to a
degree) the 4 forces involved. So we can also define its behavior. We
can drop down one more level. We have subatomic particles, we know how
they behave.. Then fermions. Now we're down to the bottom.. Or are we?
Some people speculate the fermions are composed of strings. Where do
you hit the bottom? Well, wherever the bottom is.. What defines the
behavior of those particles and forces? The way I see it, our Universe
has certain forces and definitions that have no explanation. They are
just there. But how did they get defined? If any of those forces
weren't exactly the way they are, our universe wouldn't work like it
does now to support life.
Guys.. I could go on with more, but I'm sure the stubborn hard-headed
people will already be flaming me on these. I'll give one more tidbit
of reasoning.. This has to do with why I decided Christianity is the
most logical choice (over judaism, islam, etc.)
The new testament was written by several different people at different
times. THe books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were all written
decades after the events mentioned, by 4 seperate people, in different
areas. All 4 books essentially tell the same story. There are some
bits that conflict with each other (which confirms to me, as odd as it
sounds, that the books are genuine because they were written from each
person's memory) If it was just one book, you could argue that it was
one person's fantasy. But the 4 books helps me to see that is most
likely happened. He also modernized what we, as Christians, believe,
by abolishing all of the old barbaric rituals of the old testament,
dumb things like the sabboth day, and his teachings are masterful.
When I read about Jesus I see teachings that were totally to the
contrary of other, more barbaric religions. Most historians believe
Jesus existed and was executed by Pontius Pilate, even if they don't
believe he was supernatural. So it is left up to you and me to decide
if the story sounds plausable or not. Obviously, many people
(including, I imagine 100% of the reading audience here) will choose
not to believe.
I don't see miracles as magic tricks, or even supernatural. I believe
the universe has more than 3 geometric dimensions (plus a 4th for time)
And God most likely is a multi-dimensional being. He can look into our
bodies and see all parts simultaneously and even touch them without
cutting us open, in the same way you could do this to a 2-dimensional
creature (if one existed) So any interference God does to the universe
isn't through supernatural means, rather it is all logical and
scientific. Just a little beyond the scope of our 3 dimensional
imagination.

OK, when you don't know that the Theory of Evolution isn't a choice,
but an observed, undeniable part of our reality, you lose all
credibility regarding having any kind of authority within the scientific
realm.
The ToE is not a religious choice. Gravity is not a choice either, and
yet the Theory of Evolution and Gravity Theory are theories standing
equal in the eyes of reality.
Would you care to discuss why gravity may sound "neat" but that you
just don't buy it?
Do you realize how stupid that sounds?
Think about it.
Oh. Either give us your evidence, or stop your whining. You have dug a
deep hole for yourself that you need to crawl out of now before anyone
here is going to give any seriousness to your words.
Have a nice day.

1) The universe. Where did it come from? It seems to have had a
beginning (the big bang) and no evidence exists that it will ever
definatly have a "big crunch." So it seems illogical for something to
have a beginning without comming from something else.
Technically the big bang is not stated to be the origin
of the universe.
Where did God come from? If he is eternal what
was he doing for the 1000 billion trillion years before
creating the universe?
2) Life. Yes, I believe (mostly) in evolution. However, I have NEVER
seen a convincing case of abiogenesis.
Argument from ignorance. You don't understand it therefore
God did it? How do you know Osiris didn't create life?
You can debate evolution until

Again, argument from ignorance.
Take a look a some of the reference materials to be
found in talk.origins.
For example, how often do I hear on the the

Interesting. I find this one of the best arguments against God.
All that detail is totally unnecessary to any stated or implied purpose
that God had in creating us or the world. If God is omnipotent
he could have created water to be just water with all its normally
observable properties but no finer structure. Quarks, etc. are totally
unnecessary and irrelevant to our ostensible, Biblical purpose of being
God's
children, following his commandments, worshiping him, being
judged by him, and being rewarded or punished.
Hydrogen and God are incongruous. But Hydrogen is real.

If you expect us to accept any kind of "scientific" explanation for your

one person's fantasy.
You and your imaginary god have fun together. We're not interested.

Okay.. since everyone seems to be critical of my decision of believing
in God for scientific reasons, I doubt any explanation will serve any
positive use here.
Why is that you've chosen to not respond to the intelligent posts that
you've seen?
In case you're not just a drive-by troll, let's see if you're willing to
answer a very simple (and civil question). Let us suppose that science
has no explanation for any of the above. Why do you find that to be
"proof" of god(s) rather than proof of the limits of our scientific inquiry?

By "intolerance and hatred" do you mean we question your unsupported
assertions?
Okay.. since everyone seems to be critical of my decision of believing
in God for scientific reasons, I doubt any explanation will serve any
positive use here.
It's really funny how frequently theists present statements like this;
claiming to have evidence, and then refusing to present it because we
don't have an "open mind." "Open mind" doesn't mean "accept
unsupported assertions."
I can already see with the close-mindedness I've
found here, that if God himself descended from Heaven into your

He'll never know until he tries.
Instead you'd come up with
some excuse to explain it away.
This is another of those euphemisms. Here, "excuse" means "facts,
evidence, and tested theories."
But in case there is even one open
minded person here, I will give a few examples of why I believe in the
existence of God. I can already hear the critizism, but here it is:
Also, I would mention that some of these are just questions, that

Ah, the "I don't understand, therefore god" argument. That's a new
one. If the universe requires a beginning, why doesn't god?
2) Life. Yes, I believe (mostly) in evolution. However, I have NEVER
seen a convincing case of abiogenesis. You can debate evolution until
you are blue in the face, but where did the first cell come from?
Abiogenesis doesn not equal evolution.
I have heard the standard Athiest answer 1,000 times. It usually
involves some kind of experiment done to create amino acids.
Do you know why?
Yet, I found most athiests have accepted that on blind faith and haven't

Cite?
Even if aliens seeded earth, where did the aliens come from? Add to

That proves it.
So if it can't even be recreated, what makes anyone think it could have happened by
accident?
Because you're talking about huge numbers of chemical reactions
happening pretty much continuously over huge stretches of time. Kind
of like how somebody wins the lottery just about every week, even
though the odds are something like 14 billion to one.
http://www.chem.duke.edu/~jds/cruise_chem/Exobiology/miller.html
....The gases they used were methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen
(H2), and water (H2O). Next, he ran a continuous electric current
through the system, to simulate lightning storms believed to be common
on the early earth. Analysis of the experiment was done by
chromotography. At the end of one week, Miller observed that as much as
10-15% of the carbon was now in the form of organic compounds. Two
percent of the carbon had formed some of the amino acids which are used
to make proteins. Perhaps most importantly, Miller's experiment showed
that organic compounds such as amino acids, which are essential to
cellular life, could be made easily under the conditions that
scientists believed to be present on the early earth. This enormous
finding inspired a multitude of further experiments....
If these compounds were not created in a reducing atmosphere here on
Earth as Miller suggested, then where did they come from? New theories
have recently been offered as alternative sites for the origin of life.
....
One current theory is that life originated deep beneath the surface of
the ocean at deep sea hydrothermal vents. These hydrothermal vents were
first discovered in 1979. Soon after, scientists made an exciting
discovery. These vents release hot gaseous substances from the center
of the earth at temperatures in excess of 572oF. Previously scientists
were sure that life could not exist, deep beneath the surface of the
ocean. After the discovery of hydrothermal vents, they found ecosystems
thriving in the depths of the ocean. ...
3) Evolution. Evolution is a great theory. I like it. But it lacks
evidence in certain areas. For example, how often do I hear on the the

"News" isn't "science."

by the theory of evolution is that significant change requires millions
of years. So, if that is the case, why are there these sudden changes
(use humans as a good example) where we can't seem to find the direct

Thanks for being so specific.
And even if we DO find them, there should be millions of
them, not just one or two. This tells me that the change from the
ancient, primative hominids to Humans must have been quick.
WHAT tells you that?
Far too
quick to be natural. Even so, we have features about us found in no

easily explained by evolution.
http://www.livescience.com/animalworld/prairie_dogs_041206.html
Prairie dogs, those little pups popping in and out of holes on vacant
lots and rural rangeland, are talking up a storm. They have different
"words'' for tall human in yellow shirt, short human in green shirt,
coyote, deer, red-tailed hawk and many other creatures.
They can even coin new terms for things they've never seen before,
independently coming up with the same calls or words, according to Con
Slobodchikoff, a Northern Arizona University biology professor and
prairie dog linguist.
Prairie dogs of the Gunnison's species, which Slobodchikoff has
studied, speak different dialects in Grants and Taos, N.M.; Flagstaff,
Ariz.; and Monarch Pass, Colo., but they would likely understand one
another, the professor says.
"So far, I think we are showing the most sophisticated communication
system that anyone has shown in animals,'' Slobodchikoff said. ...
"We're chipping away with this at the idea that animals don't have
language,'' Slobodchikoff said.
----------------
What exactly do you mean by "morals"? What do you mean by "etc."?
When I look at Evolution I see a
drawing board where God was designing his creation. I'm not of the
church who believes God spoke everything into creation. I think it was
a long, tedious design process with many mistakes and discoveries along
the way.
God makes mistakes? Wow, just like people.
The eventual goal being to have design Human beings. I know
atheists won't see it this way.
Articulate why you think that.
It is sort of like looking at an
antique painting. One person sees one thing, another person looks at
the same painting and sees something else. But, this is what i see.
You see what you want to see.
4) Particles and rules: Everything in the universe obeys a set of
rules. We understand most of them. We can look at a molecule of water
and see how it behaves. We know at what temperature it boils, and when

More of the "I don't know, therefore" argument.
Guys.. I could go on with more, but I'm sure the stubborn hard-headed
people will already be flaming me on these.
Yeah, how unreasonable of us to question you.
I'll give one more tidbit
of reasoning.. This has to do with why I decided Christianity is the

The new testament was written by several different people at different

Or they all heard the same stories. Or they were copying from each
other.
He also modernized what we, as Christians, believe,
by abolishing all of the old barbaric rituals of the old testament,
dumb things like the sabboth day, and his teachings are masterful.
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the
prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or
one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
When I read about Jesus I see teachings that were totally to the

Matthew 10:34
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send
peace, but a sword.
Luke 14:26
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife,
and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he
cannot be my disciple.
Most historians believe

Please list a few.
So it is left up to you and me to decide
