Castration may belong to the past, but the stigma of epilepsy lives on

The day I was diagnosed with epilepsy was probably one of the happiest
of my life. For years I had feared that I was losing my mind and would
end my days locked in a psychiatric ward. Periodically, I would be
overcome by a sensation of inexplicable, paralysing terror. On other
occasions, I would set out for one destination, and, hours later, end
up somewhere completely different, with no memory of how I had got
there. Sometimes, on a simple shopping expedition, the world would
suddenly become menacingly unfamiliar, as though I had never seen it
before.
