I'm published again! (Gay marriages) |
From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Sunday, August 3, 2003
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/133347_ltrs3.html
My letter reads:
Reserving marriage for straights is a special right
Why is it so vital that marriage remain an exclusive, heterosexuals-only
country club? If extending the many rights and responsibilities of
marriage to same-sex couples is a "special right," how is reserving
marriage for straight couples anything less than a special right?
To claim that marriage exists for the security of children is an
easy-to-prove lie. There is no requirement for couples to prove their
fertility in order to obtain a marriage license; there is no requirement
that a couple procreate in order to retain their marriage license.
Marriage exists in order to create a family, whether or not children are
or may be a part of that family. Marriage creates security for the
family by providing for inheritance, power-of-attorney, assumed
co-ownership, survivorship, visitation and next-of-kin status, among
many such protections. The irony of prohibiting same-sex marriages is
that gay people -- too often disowned and excluded from the families we
grew up with -- are much more in need of these protections than are
straight people.

What we need to do is return to the original intent laid down by the
founders of this great Christian nation;
1. Only white male landowners should be allowed to vote.
2. Blacks should be returned to slavery.
3. etc...

Well said Greg!
In a related story...
Here in Tasmania the gay rights movement is considering taking the
Roman Catholic Church to court if it publishes/distributes the
Vaticans recent reafirmation of the sinfulness of the "gay life style"
and speaking against gay marriage.
Tasmania now has laws against "hate speach"
(although I am a little uncomfortable with any anti -speech
legislation)
Could get interesting.
8-)
(Tasmania was the last state in Australia where homosexual sex was
illegal -
See

I am straight guy myself, but take an interest in these things.
(like freedom, justice...)
