Imagine a world where life is dead and death is alive... |
I often wonder what the "flip side" of this world might be like. I
refer to a sort of "anti-world" equivalent, something like anti-matter to
matter, only opposite in -everything-, including abstract concepts such as what
it means to be alive and what it means to die.
My friend and I used to visit such a world in our minds. Things that
grow do so as dead things - dead trees sprout up from rotted soil in a process
that begins with the decay of microorganisms. Dead birds lay motionless in the
dry, twisted branches, their eyeless heads peering lifelessly towards a bright,
but sunless sky. They are dead, and yet in this place, they are as alive as
anything can be.
Living babies crawl into the wombs of their dead mothers in order to
disappear forever from the world. The dead mothers, in turn, slowly become
animated until their biological processes begin - an event which heralds the end
of their conscious existence within this realm as they, too, grow younger and
smaller, eventually seeking out a cold, dead womb into which to crawl and
disappear.
In this world, awareness only happens to those who are dead. Once a
person comes back to life, their awareness ceases to function. As they go about
their unliving existences, mud coalesces around them into decayed flesh as
splinters of bone spill forth from the mouths of dead animals, collecting and
weaving themselves into entire bones as the mud and decayed flesh surrounding
them becomes more prounounced, more readily recognizable as something organic
and "non-alive". Sewage and mud flows into the pores and the bodies of the
emerging dead only to be later vomited as fresh water and healthy food.
The living dead do not walk or fly, but rather are moved by forces
completely external to themselves. They spend the early parts of their
emergence contemplating all sorts of things about existence and reality at
large...
:::end:::
Dayum, I think I could learn to like it there. ;-)
