Object: Impending Catholic schism?
I've read reports of disagreements on who will succeed John Paul II. I was
discussing this with a friend, and we both agreed that this might cause a
huge split in the Catholic church. What do you think?

"Not a chance". The RCC has getting on for 2,000 years experience at
this kind of thing.

There's quite a few other schismatic sects in the US, some of which
are breakaways from Lefebvre's group, some of which arose on their
own.

There have been a lot of splits over that time period.
http://www.answers.com/topic/old-catholic-church tells of one that happened
when the pope said he was infalliable.
American Catholics are to a large extent far different from Catholics in
other countries, they just don't admit it.
The priests tend to have a *lot* more power over everyday life in a lot of
countries.
Years ago I photographed a wedding for a friend of mine. The Irish Catholic
priest, just over from Ireland was not going to let them get married at the
alter because the groom was not a catholic and I was not going to be allowed
to take pictures in the church. The local bishop had a few words with him.
The pictures of them at the alter turned out pretty good.

life in a lot of countries.

The church tends to be far more involved in life elsewhere,
too. They're a lot more active in dealing with poverty in
South America, for example, then they are here.
One of the major problems with the Catholic church is that
they don't account for the social differences from culture to
culture. Divorce, all by itself, is destroying the Catholic
church in America. Catholics divorce at about the same
rate as the national average, but the church doesn't
recognize their divorces. Every time a Catholic couple
gets divorced that's another two people alienated by their
church.
In some ways it makes sense. That is to say, they believe
there is a God and that this God doesn't grade on a
sliding scale. In other ways it's kind of.... well... retarded.
I mean, this God can't even find the time to do anything
about a holocaust or a famine, but "He" is going to
lose sleep over a divorce. What's up with that?
Ironically, the Catholic church has demonstrated it's
willingness to... to... "bend" in response to cultural
differences. The most obvious example was brought
up by someone else, elsewhere, in that the church
has allowed a small number of priests to be married.
But that "bending" was for the church, not for the
benefit of the rank-and-file Catholic.
Personally, I will mourn the loss of the Catholic
church. That should mean something coming from
me, a person who was raised Catholic but managed
to escape the insanity. I know some people are still
angry over what happened a thousand years ago,
or what they enjoy believing happened 60 years
ago, but not me. I have a thing for history myself,
but not for pretending that I'm somehow living it.
One fundamental difference between the Catholic
church and almost all Protestant sects is their
tradition towards the bible. They've grown closer
over the years, but traditionally a Catholic was
never supposed to bother with reading the bible.
They could if they wanted to, but it was entirely
unnecessary.
Bible reading requires a great deal of interpretation,
and quite a lot of historical perspective. The
traditional Catholic view was that it was best left
to the trained theologians, people educated in
the bible & history. This differed significantly from
the Protestant tradition, where everyone was
supposed to read & interpret the bible.
You'd think the Catholic tradition would be the more
dangerous of the two, as it lends itself to a centralized
authority, with the people reliant on the priest for
any & all "spiritual" guidance. In reality though, things
seem to have turned out differently, at least here in
the United States. The Protestant tradition of
personally interpreting the bible couldn't help but
allow every bigot, every malicious *****, every
greedy S.O.B. from justifying anything they want.
When a racist interprets the bible, God is a racist.
Period. No question.

One thing, I think they will all agree on: The next pope will have one foot in
the grave.
He had too much control, for too long.
Besides, it really fucks your chances of promotion, when one guy hogs the papal

Hypocrite! You refuse to use what your god has given you on a daily
basis. Just as a car's battery will die if you don't use it, so will
your brain.

Yep, you're a good example of that.

God didn't give us condoms. A condom is a man made device
specifically used to artificially block that which God did give us -
procreation.

There are other things you can artificially block with a condom. Like
AIDS.

How many people do you think have uttered the statement "Thank God I was
wearing a condom"?

I think I've even said that a time or two. Of course, Duke and Gastric and
the ilk will consider an atheist's use of a religious metaphor as "proof"
that Jesus Christ exists.

It's unlikely there's going to be some one radical who does something
like....endorse the use of condoms (pathetic that that would be radical
really)

That would truly be radical as it's against what God has given us.

Where in the bible does it say "Thou shalt not protect thyself against
disease"?

No problem, if you get a disease you just have to get the church elders
to lay hands on you.

Okay, where in the Bible does it explicitly say "Thou Shalt Not Use Thy
Condom"? I've looked through 5 different translations of the Bible and
none of them make ANY reference to "condoms". Can you help me out here?
I want to read the passage!

I want to read the passage!

DAD:
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.
I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.
You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,
Because
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.
GIRL:
Let the heathen spill theirs
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is wanted.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
MUM:
Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.
MEN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
WOMEN:
If a sperm is wasted,...
CHILDREN:
....God get quite irate.
PRIEST:
Every sperm is sacred.
BRIDE and GROOM:
Every sperm is good.
NANNIES:
Every sperm is needed...
CARDINALS:
....In your neighbourhood!
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is useful.
Every sperm is fine.
FUNERAL CORTEGE:
God needs everybody's.
MOURNER #1:
Mine!
MOURNER #2:
And mine!
CORPSE:
And mine!
NUN:
Let the Pagan spill theirs
O'er mountain, hill, and plain.
HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.
EVERYONE:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaaate!
