In Southern Patagonia, Charles Darwin is big medicine. I'm writing this
from Puerto Natales, from the third floor of the Charles Darwin
Hotel-every tin-roof town in southern Chile seems to have one. There
are streets named after the British naturalist, and restaurants and
schools and, of course, bars. Outside my window the sun is setting on
the broken black teeth of Torres del Paine National Park. The low
clouds catch and stumble as they race over the icy massifs. If you
don't ponder Creation here you are as insensible as a stone.

I thought Patagonia was in Argentina.
Anyways, if you read _The Voyage of the Beagle_, you will see that Darwin
spent a lot of time in both regions exploring the countryside, meeting the
locals, and examining flora and fauna. Far more time was spent here than in
the Galapagos Islands.

Patagonia also partly lies in Chili.

Yeap.
From time to time, newspapers remember when "the great naturalist"
Charles Darwin paid a visit to my country. School biology books often
remember that too with a bit of pride.
