In the News: Bill proposes teaching of 'intelligent design' alongside evolution |

JEFFERSON CITY-Scientists picked Darwin's birthday to announce their
opposition to a bill in the Missouri House.
More than 250 scientists and teachers endorsed a statement Feb. 12
opposing the teaching of "intelligent design" in Missouri classrooms.
Calling it a form of creationism, they believe teaching the subject is
equal to teaching religion in public classrooms.
"Our position is that intelligent design doesn't meet the definition
of science, either legally or practically," Frank Schmidt, president
of the Missouri Science Teachers Association, said.
"At a time when Missouri's economic development rests so heavily on
building and attracting human capital for life sciences, it doesn't
make sense to try to force non-science into public schools."
The Missouri Science Standard Act, designated HB 911, is a bill which
would mandate teaching intelligent design in all Missouri science
classes, including astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, health,
genetics, geology and others. It would give equal treatment of the
subject alongside Charles Darwin's theory of biological evolution.
The act defines intelligent design as "a hypothesis that the complex
form and function observed in biological structures are the result of
intelligence." That intelligence could be anything from aliens to the
Almighty God, according to the act's creator.

Oh, good. Raelian theory will be also mandated then!

That _could_ actually be rather amusing with the right teachers.
Unfortunately the right teachers would be the wrong teachers to have their
contracts renewed for another year.
