Nineteen-year-old Dan Johnson said he held in his pocket the key to
preventing a bird-flu pandemic.
After watching television news reports warning of a potential
outbreak, Johnson, a sophomore at the University of Southern
California, picked up a copy of Science and Health With Key to the
Scriptures, a seminal text of the Christian Science Church. He flipped
through its pages until he found a relevant passage.
On a 3x5 index card, Johnson wrote: "Disease is an experience of
so-called mortal mind. It is fear made manifest on the body." He
stuffed the card in his pocket and carried it with him for more than a
week.
While the U.S. government stockpiles antiviral medications, scientists
work on developing new treatments and vaccines, and infectious-disease
experts try to detect and contain a virus, Christian Scientists are
taking their own line of defense: They are praying.
Christian Scientists believe in spiritual, rather than medical,
healing. They believe in the power of prayer to both prevent a bird
flu pandemic and heal those who are sick should an outbreak occur.
Mary Baker Eddy, who founded the Church of Christ, Scientist in 1879,
after recovering from injuries sustained from a fall on an icy
sidewalk, taught that God is infinitely good and that sin, disease and
death are illusions.
Debbie Simmons, a member of the Tenth Church of Christ, Scientist in
Los Angeles, explained, "Whether you call it cough or cold or bird
flu, it's really what we would call error, a false statement about
what is true about man." Sandra Rygel, a financial analyst, has been
trying to ward off a flu outbreak by reading hymns. One of her
favorites, Robert P. Stewart's "Mount Calvary," speaks of the
spiritual nature of man: "In atmosphere of Love divine, we live, and
move, and breathe. Though mortal eyes may see it not, 'tis sense that
would deceive."

Every last one of them, including Dan Johnson, is a hypocrite, a
fucking liar, doing publicity stunts to advertise his false belief, but
not willing to lay his life on the line for that belief. He should be
deliberately exposed to the 50%-fatal strain of bird flu, given no
medical treatment whatsoever, and if he survives he should be exposed
to Ebola and again given no medical treatment, and if he survives he
should be exposed to anthrax, and only if he also survives that should
his belief be given any credence. I want every last one of those liars
to give their lives in such futile demonstration of their false belief.
Only then will the world be rid of their stupidity and arrogance.

Debbie Simmons, ... Sandra Rygel, ... Robert P. Stewart ...

Three more hypocrites who should be put to the test.
I hope they all die from their stupidity. The sooner the better.

I wouldn't go that far. They're spectacularly wrong, and are free to
change their minds, and I hope they do for the sake of their children
if they get sick. In the meantime, I also hope they don't keep
poultry. The silly fools.

Surprising: "At this point another practitioner who reputedly had

Failure of God's Plan A is evidently a test of faith that the Christian

That was going to be my point. Seeing as _everyone_ (pretty much)
believed in deity and the absolute nature of divine governance and it
didn't work then I wonder exactly how much additional faith Johnson
believes he has. Maybe it's because it was they were all technically
Catholics so that kind of faith doesn't count. However, It also didn't
work during plague ridden London during the 17th century either (unless
you want to believe the Great Fire of London was divine providence).
Oh yeah - last time we had a flu pandemic millions died as well.
Wonder how many of those were God-fearing Christians.

More power to them if they will just stick to their beliefs. If an

work on developing new treatments and vaccines, and infectious-disease
experts try to detect and contain a virus, Christian Scientists are
taking their own line of defense: They are praying.

We need a rapid response vaccine. It takes a long time to produce a
vaccine that will counter any specific strain of flu virus.
The latests antivirals already have selected for resistant flu virus.
Tamiflu can be countered by a single base-pair substitution and the flu
has a 1 X 10^-5 mutation rate. Resistant virus have been found
evolving within the infection of individuals treated with the
antiviral. Everyone should hope that the latest avian strain
attenuates before it adapts to infecting humans.
The Christian Science Church could be onto something if they just keep
their people isolated and praying, that would be about the best thing
that you could do during a pandemic. Churches should probably be
prepared to have web broadcast services to keep their people at home.
No joke.
The best defense against a pandemic highly lethal flu is to not get it.
You can infect others at least one day before you show symptoms. If a
flu pandemic hit, all public gathering places that were not necessary
would likely be closed. Going to church would be a risk that you
shouldn't take. Going to a place like WalMart would be taking your
life in your hands. The flu only lasts a couple hours on surfaces like
door knobs and counter tops, and it is mainly spread through coughing
and sneezing. You have to be in proximity to the infected person to
breath in or get micro spray in your eyes. Even though the flu doesn't
survive long on surfaces the CDC still recommends that you wash your
hands frequently. Just imagine a generation of pandemic survivors that
are compulsive hand washers. My bet is that it won't be long before
they start to pressure market hand sanitizers that are effective
against influenza.
I heard a PBS radio show where the guy was looking into the 1918
pandemic and he figured that you had to expect to home school your kids
for up to 12 weeks. Schools and other public gathering places would
likely be closed until the danger of infection had passed. If you
already home school your kids you are that much ahead of the game.
That isn't an endorsement for home schooling it is just a fact.
Pandemics are a whole lot more frequent than asteroid impacts so if you
worry about getting hit by a big rock you should probably prepare for
some kind of pandemic. No joke.

Strictly, you don't have to "home school", you just have to keep 'em in
the house.
As you observe, you also don't go out yourself, not to work, not to
shop, not to date, and you also don't get groceries sent in to the
home, because the virus can be carried on the packaging if your
"personal shopper" sneezes.

Actually, delivery should be a booming business. The flu virus can
only live on dry surfaces for a couple hours. You can have the food
delivered to your backyard or something, leave it out over night and
bring it into the house safely. Flu can live in the frozen state
indefinitely, and on fresh meat and such for several hours to days, but
for MREs and canned good you should be safe after only a few hours of
quarantine. Even fresh food is safe if you wash your hands after
handling and cook it.
