In the News: Darby adopts origins policy |
From the article:

By JENNY JOHNSON Staff Reporter
DARBY - Despite legal recommendations advising against the action,
Darby School Board trustees Monday adopted an objective origins policy
that will allow the school's science curriculum to teach theories
other than evolution.
Trustees voted 3-2 to adopt the policy - Mary Lovejoy and Bob
Wetzsteon opposed the policy, and Chairwoman Gina Schallenberger, Doug
Banks and Elisabeth Bender voting for the policy change.
"This is not a good policy to adopt," Lovejoy said. "We need to go to
the state before we consider this."
Wetzsteon, the other nay vote, said he didn't understand how the board
can go against the recommendation of the school board's attorney.

"The policy is based on a push to teach intelligent design - a
biological origins theory that assumes there is a designer of the
biological world. Critics argue that the theory is speculation not
accepted in the scientific community and a guise to introduce Biblical
creationism in a public school setting."
Even the ID proponents like Dembski agree that it isn't up to snuff,
yet. Even Meyers admitted that it wasn't science in Ohio. If they
try and teach ID they will be sued and ID may have to defend itself in
court. They could lose by a technicality, but if they have to
testify, their testamony would amount to "we told them that it wasn't
science, but they still wanted to teach the ***** that we were
dishing out anyway." It is going to be the rubes fault again.
"Always blame the victims" would become the new Discovery Institute
moto. I've wondered why Meyers and Wells weren't tarred and feathered
in Ohio. Their victims must just feel like they deserve it.
What? You don't have a scientific theory? What? You don't really
have anything about ID to teach? You want to teach about
controversies that don't have anything to do with ID? What good is
that? Why did we bother to invite you to talk infront of this board?
The tragedy is that there were still people on the Ohio board that
want to teach ID after being told all of this.
Darby won't be the last group of rubes that do something like this.

Can they sue the Discovery Institute lawyer for malpractice or do they
have to take the responsibility for taking his advice and not their
own lawyers?

"Attorneys from the Montana School Boards Association and the county
advised against the policy adoption, citing a likelihood that the
district would be sued and may lose accreditation.
Banks, however, said, 'To consider that a theory can't be challenged
is bad science. I think that what we're doing here is setting the tone
for where Darby is heading.'"
obviously the educational program isnt up to snuff anyway if Banks can
say something like that and ifhe thinks the theoryless anti-science of
creationism falls under the rubric of scientific methodology.
"Darby's policy doesn't specifically include language requiring
intelligent design to be a part of science class, but instructs
teachers to challenge the theory of evolution. Teachers are
'encouraged to help students assess evidence for and against theories,
to analyze the scientific strengths and weaknesses of existing
scientific theories, including the theory of evolution.'"
well at least there is that. 'teacher, but what about goddidit'
'sorry, not a theory, doesn't deserve to get addressed in this class,
now moving on...'
"Darby parent and minister Curtis Brickley proposed the policy change
and caught the attention of many community members with a multi-media
presentation supporting intelligent design. He argued the theory is
based in science and is not an attempt to teach creationism."
and thus the source is revealed, a scientifically ignorarnt minister.
perhaps -he- is the one who knows the scientific theory of intelligent
design.

Not needed here, luckily. It's sort of assumed, and has been for the
33 years I've lived in this district. Myths are taught at the high
school level - as myths. Religion, in whatever guise, isn't taught,
except in Comp. Rel. and being mentioned where appropriate - as the
religion of the peoples being studied, or as the religion that erected
a particular building, etc.

Which theory is he talking about?
I just wish they'd try to pull something like that here. Aside from
all the people from Brookhaven National Lab that would tear the mere
suggestion of teaching ID to shreds, you can bet that "evolution is a
fact that no 'theory' can 'counteract'" would be part of what was
reported in the press. Of course it would never happen here because
both of the parents who believe in ID would be kept out of the
meeting.

The court case that results will kill the "intelligent design movement".
They've just shot themselves in the head.
I think DI will do everything possible to prevent this from going to
court. They KNOW better.

I usually agree with you, but I think you are missing their strategy.
What they are doing is keeping this sort of issue in the press, in
front of multiple schoolboards (There have been lots lately). Their
followers do not do the research, they do not check references. The
followers only see the info that the preachers and the DI give them.
They pass the resolution, and go to court. They lose, and cannot
understand it...of course!! It is those evil, activist liberal judges
who are preventing the TRUTH from getting to our children!! So, now
the preachers and the DI can say...make sure to vote Republican...they
will put in honest, God Loving (or fearing) men who will not stop us
from teaching ID/creationism in school.
This is nowhere NEAR finished...as long as there is massive funding
for groups like the DI this will continue. The only solution is better
education, which is why the DI is trying to screw that up as much as
possible.
Let me jump on an old favorite of mine...
Why don't the universities that train 1st-5th grade teachers give any
information on science? Why are so many kids taught by teachers who
have no idea how science works? WHY???
