In the News: Emotions rage at book hearing |
From the article:
--------------------------------
AUSTIN — A public hearing on whether biology textbooks should include
what some call weaknesses in the theory of evolution drew an
emotional, standing-room-only crowd on both sides of the issue
Wednesday, with each side worried about how the origins of life will
be taught to teens.
The debate raging before the State Board of Education pits scientist
against scientist, teacher against teacher.
"This process seems like it will never end," Steven Schafersman,
president of Texas Citizens for Science, said of the continual battle
over the high school texts.

Intelligent design or creationism should never be part of a biology class,
testified the Rev. Roger Paynter, with the First Baptist Church in Austin.
"It is my deep conviction that creation flows from the hand of a creator
God," he said. "But that is a statement of faith and not something that I or
anyone else can prove in a scientific experiment. To lead children to
believe otherwise is a disservice to them."

'tis me indeed. Good to see ya, Lizz.
The more I see of such inane debates about limiting the putative creator
deity to the timescale of human history, the gladder I am to live outside
the USA. As Lizz knows, I am not a believer. I just don't understand why
some believers want their God to remain small and confined to an interest in
only one species on this one planet instead of celebrating their Creator as
the billions-of-years-in-the-making author of all the awesome spectacle of
the cosmos which science shows us.

Just you wait. As Creationism gains ground in the USA, we will export it
to the rest of the world; like we did with Levi's, McDonald's, Coca Cola,
General Motors, Rock Music, Blues and Jazz, (as well as dear Britney). We
haven' t been so successful with our beers for some odd reason.
The American Spirit is irrepressible and soon we will remake all of the
world in our image, and that includes suppressing science and independent
thought in the name of Creationism. That is, of course, the whole point
behind our imperialist war against Iraq.

the Europeans are. The only two US beer I can think of are Budwieser

to the Europeans (especially the Czechs) make such good beer. The

those of us who enjoy a good beer. There's just not enough to export.
As a beer drinker from outside the US despite the international image
that Homer J Simpson protrays I found US folks arnt quite the drinkers
the Europeans are. The only two US beer I can think of are Budwieser
(which is originally a Czech beer see http://www.budvar.cz/) and
Miller - which I don't see that often over here. This is probably due
to the Europeans (especially the Czechs) make such good beer. The
Australians arnt bad at it either.
Totally off topic again.....

Okay, also OT; When I was stationed in Germany, the NCO club had to
carry american beers and was expect to sell it. The only way they
could get rid of it for money was to new arrivals. Then they started
giving it away, 1 american to 1 german.

It might be misleading to call attention to AB Bud's rip-off of a name,
but nothing else, of an original Czech beer. Budvar doesn't put rice in
their beer, does it?
It is nice to see the EU poking AB in the eye in support of good food.
Totally off topic again.....

Intelligent design or creationism should never be part of a biology
class, testified the Rev. Roger Paynter, with the First Baptist Church
in Austin. "It is my deep conviction that creation flows from the hand
of a creator God," he said. "But that is a statement of faith and not
something that I or anyone else can prove in a scientific experiment.
To lead children to believe otherwise is a disservice to them."

'tis me indeed. Good to see ya, Lizz.
The more I see of such inane debates about limiting the putative creator
deity to the timescale of human history, the gladder I am to live outside
the USA. As Lizz knows, I am not a believer. I just don't understand why
some believers want their God to remain small and confined to an interest
in only one species on this one planet instead of celebrating their
Creator as the billions-of-years-in-the-making author of all the awesome
spectacle of the cosmos which science shows us.

I don't keep God in a box--he's not a cat, you know.
