'Hidden slur alleged in comic strip `B.C.': Christian cartoonist
denies recent `outhouse' strip takes shot at Islam'
From the article:
-------------------------------------------
Did Johnny Hart -- the beloved creator of the comic strip B.C. and one
of the most widely read cartoonists on Earth -- sneak a vulgar
defamation of Islam into the comics pages on Nov. 10?
The question was raised last week by the Council on American-Islamic
Relations in an e-mail to its membership.
Hart, 73, and his syndicate say no -- that a simple, straightforward
joke is being misconstrued. But the cartoonist has a history of
evangelizing his Christian beliefs through his comic cavemen.
The cartoon, which appeared in the Akron Beacon Journal and more than
1,200 other papers worldwide, shows a caveman entering an outhouse at
night, and then saying, from inside, ``Is it just me, or does it stink
in here?''
-------------------------------------------
Read it at http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/entertainment/7331058.htm
The comic in question can be viewed at
http://www.comics.com/creators/bc/archive/bc-20031110.html

I read this story and I thought it was pathetic. I looked up the actual
cartoon and it's obvious that there is no intent to attack Islam. Sure,
Muslims are under attack from lots of areas, but they're being
hypersensitive, finding ***** that ain't there.
IMO, they ought to concentrate on things that are *serious* before they
start making noise like this.

If Hart weren't a religious fanatic and hadn't published
anti-menorah strip previously, I'd agree. I'd give this
the benefit of doubt, but I wouldn't put it past him to
have this in his (petty and deranged) mind.

I must admit the anti-Islam interpretation of the comic would never have
occurred to me if someone else hadn't brought it up, but now that I see it,
I think it's there - not obvious, but it's there. What really clinches it
for me is the gap between the first and second panels - shaped like an I? -
with the letters "SLAM" running vertically down through it.

I can't give him the benefit of the doubt. The repeated use of the
crescent, a symbol of Islam; the coded word "Islam" in the intercalary
panel; the otherwise meaningless punch line (walking into an outhouse
and announcing that it stinks is like climbing into a casket and noting
that it's cramped). I just don't see any other conclusion; he cheesily
concealed an attack on a religion not his own in his worthless comic
strip. It wouldn't be the first time.

Bluntly, 90% of all 'comic' strips in today's papers suck dead donkey *****.
Hart hasn't been funny for years. He's not alone.

I'm glad my home town newspaper- LA Times, dropped that sorry excuse

From what I can tell of the description.

Have you looked at the cartoon, which is at
http://www.comics.com/creators/bc/archive/bc-20031110.html
as the original poster said?
I thought it sounded like whining, too, but when you look at the
cartoon, there's just no question that that ***** Hart is insulting
Islam, because what else could the point of the cartoon be?
At the risk of deconstructing the life out of it: The first panel
shows a silhouetted figure at night is walking to an outhouse with a
crescent moon in the sky and another cut into the outhouse door (one of
the traditional shapes for such a window in American, if not caveman,
outhouses). The second panel is a narrow inter-panel area with the word
SLAM, which can easily be taken as the letter I containing the letters
s-l-a-m, or "Islam"--an odd construction for a cartoonist who never
plays with his frames, when the word "slam" could have been put into a
picture. Then, after one otherwise uninteresting frame (what they call a
beat in the comedy biz) the voice emerging from the outhouse says, "Is
is just me, or does it STINK in here?"
That's it. That's the whole cartoon. As usual, pointless and
unfunny, just what we expect from "B.C.", but Hart's cartoons usually
end with a punch line, and this doesn't seem to have one. I don't know
what else it could be except a painfully jejune religious insult, par
for the course from this worthless cartoonist. Doubtless this will
result in his strip being mercifully pulled from even more newspapers,
and doubtless that will result in a press release denying an insulting
intent and at the same time decrying his non-Christian detractors.

None of Hart's cartoons have a point, nor do any of them contain any humor.

The strip is dumb, but not a slam on Islam, IMO.
