Intelligent design study appears
Publication of paper in peer-reviewed journal sparks controversy
By Trevor Stokes
The publication in a peer-reviewed biology journal of an article which
sounds themes often heard in discussions of "intelligent design"–a
theory one critic calls "the old creationist arguments in fancy
clothes"–has drawn criticism from the members of the society that
publishes the journal, and from others.
In an article entitled "The origin of biological information and the
higher taxonomic categories," which was made available online on
August 28 by the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington,
Stephen Meyer concludes: "what natural selection lacks, intelligent
selection–purposive or goal-directed design–provides." Meyer is a
senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, which, according to its Web
site "supports research by scientists and other scholars developing
the scientific theory known as intelligent design."
Intelligent design, or the design hypothesis, is the "idea that the
origin of information is best explained by an act of intelligence
rather than a strictly materialistic process," Meyer told The
Scientist.

Is this a new definition or is it old news? At least I haven't heard it
expressed that way before, and it sounds a bit weaselly to me. Is he trying
to shift the focus of ID to something else than biological systems?

WE ARE ALL INTELLIGENT DESIGNERS

It is understandable to me why the concept of intelligent design is so
popular. After all, those who believe in this concept designed something in
their lives, and it is their personal experience that they can identify with
concept of intelligent design. Choosing to have children, building a house,
creating a new business, creating a computer program or a blue print are all
actions of an intelligent designer. Certainly Bill Gates, Henry Ford or
Thomas Edison would be classified intelligent designers. Intelligent design
is a projection of the believers' own EXPERIENCE onto a blank screen which
they call "God", the intelligent designer.

I'm happy to hear that the ID-ologists have taken the next step. I
assume that this peer-reviewed publication spells out the details of
the mechanisms by which ID operates, and is not just a review article
extoling the virtues of ID again, without presenting any evidence.
Nobody would tout a vacuous review as an actual piece of research, of
course. Would they? I shall wait, with baited breath, for the
summary in which the principles and mechanisms by which design
operates are presented.

Rephrase this slightly as "what Newtonian kinematics lacks, intelligent-
purposive or goal-directed dynmics provides"...
.... and you could have explained the orbit of Mercury prior to
1915.

The good news, if this is true, is we can begin to calibrate the
designer. Clearly it is unimaginative, mammal with four limbs, no more
no less as an example. Clearly it is incompetent, eyesight and back
problems as examples. It has difficulty in maintaining focus given the
rise and disappearance of entire species and even groups such as
dinosaurs. Thus if the christian god is the designer then the chaotic
nature of human affairs is attributable not to the failings of man but
to its failings.

This must be a new definition of "study". Where I come from, a review
article that contains no new data or analyses is not considered a study.

The publication in a peer-reviewed biology journal of an article which
sounds themes often heard in discussions of "intelligent design"-a
theory one critic calls "the old creationist arguments in fancy
clothes"-has drawn criticism from the members of the society that
