Object: In the News: Man wants schools to tell students that evolution just a theory
From the article:
---------------------------------
Alexandria-AP -- An 84-year-old man has asked Alexandria schools to
put a disclaimer on their science books that explains that Darwin's
theory of evolution is theory, not fact.
Alexandria resident Arthur Darrah says there are holes in Darwin's
hypothesis and that creationism needs a bit more exposure in
Alexandria's public schools.
Darrah has distributed a letter to the Alexandria Community Schools
board proposing the schools require disclaimers in their science and
biology textbooks to help children understand that there are
differences of opinion on the origin of life.

I suggest that he follows up with a letter insisting that there should
be a disclaimer in the physics books stating that gravity is a theory,
not a fact and in the chemistry books stating that the periodic table
is a theoretical construct, not a fact. He could insist that we add a
disclaimer in the history books stating that there are differences in
opinion as to whether or not the holocaust actually happened; he could
then write to his church insisting that a disclaimer is pasted in the
front of all of the Bibles stating that there are differences in
opinion as to the literal truth of the contents.
It should keep him busy, but to do anything else wouldn't be very
fair, would it?

Wasn't there a story doing the rounds in the US of some bloke who wanted the
Bible removed from his local library coz it incited violence and fear and
wasn't suitable for children?
I've lost the link of course, and I've no idea how it was resolved but I
remember the story quite clearly

Hmm, so this guy wants the THEORY of evolution to be labelled a theory? I
wonder if anyone will ever point out to him the first word in the phrase he
finds so offensive?
The lack of intelligence these fundies display never ceases to amaze...

If schools would teach things like what the word "theory"
means in the term "theory of evolution", the difference
between a theory and a hypothesis, and expose Creationism as
a steaming pile of BS rather than a fact, hypothesis, or
theory, and just how one may distinguish the difference,
that should fully cover this fellow's concerns. But I don't
think he'd like it.

I don't think it would make a blind bit of difference to the average
fanatic that posts here.
They would go to church on Sunday, tell the pastor, the pastor would
reaffirm what he had already told them, and the school's teaching
would be ignored.

As long as the disclaimer gives examples of other theories such as
Einstein's relativity and Newton's univeral gravitation I think it is
a great idea. I agree evolution is just as much a theory as gravity --
to put it in the terms of a schoolbook -- there are disagreements on
whether or not it is a good idea to jump off of tall buildings.

Forgetting about the galaxy wide holes in creationism. Forgetting that
the TOE is something that Creationism is not. A theory as opposed to a
myth.
