In the News: Professors question intelligent design theory |

Design can't be separated from the designer.
Arguments that the universe was intelligently designed fail to
identify anything substantive about that designer, two ISU professors
said in a presentation Thursday -- a failure they said destroys the
scientific validity of those arguments.
Hector Avalos, associate professor of religious studies, and John
Patterson, professor emeritus of materials science and engineering,
both said advocates of intelligent design -- which purports that
design of the universe by an external agent can be detected in nature
-- don't represent anything new in science.
Instead, the two professors, who are atheists, said those advocates
recycle and repackage old, defeated arguments, often those proposed by
Christians to support creationism.

It is very refreshing to see that the Associate Professor of Religious
Studies is an avowed atheist. I am rapidly warming to Iowa State U.

The closest I got was a charismatic Christian converted from Buddhism
teaching religious studies at a catholic university. He also showed a
great deal of tolerance towards all religious/non-religious beliefs.
Two of his primary positions were that 1) All religions essentially
rely on circular logic, and 2) Most people remain with the same
religion they were born into, ergo they would be equally devout in
another religion under different circumstances. A refreshing (and
accurate) outlook coming from the religious department.
