In the News: Students, teachers to be excused from 'intelligent design' statement |
From the article:
--------------------------------------
A school district that attracted national attention by requiring the reading of
a statement about "intelligent design" as an alternative to the theory of
evolution in high-school biology classes made the mandate optional Friday for
teachers and students who object to it.
The Dover Area School District agreed to temporarily exempt science teachers
from having to read the statement, after seven of them signed a letter
objecting to the policy on grounds that it would violate Pennsylvania's
professional standards and practices code for teachers.
Instead, administrators will read the statement Thursday, when ninth-graders at
Dover High School are expected to learn about evolution in their biology
classes.
Students can also be excused from hearing the statement being read if their
parents object, according to a letter to parents that the district posted on
its Web site. It was unclear whether the letter was also mailed to individual
families.

Oh for goodness' sake. Excusing teachers from teaching the drivel,
absolutely, but what kind of a get-out is 'students don't have to hear it'?
The reason it shouldn't be in classrooms is because IT'S BOLLOCKS. Not
because poor children's fragile little minds will be polluted by it if they
hear it, and 'special' children, 'good atheists', presumably, can be
excused. What a pathetic non-compromise.

I think I would prefer the teachers then go over how this statement is
not science.

apparently the entire biology staff of the dover HS refused to read
the garbage proposed by the school board, citing a professional
agreement they signed prohibiting them from teaching anything that is
untrue.

Good for them. It's quite sad the school board is vastly uneducated.

Hello, theocracy with a fundamentalist US Supreme

Really - that's cool and the way it should be handled. It's not
science, so I can't teach it as science without lying and I don't lie
to children.

I'd like them to teach Lamarkism and Lysenkoism, to show what a real
'problems with the theory' look like. Both have more published
references in support of their assertions than ID, and it would
provide an opportunity to demonstrate how scientific error-cheking
works.
