Do you believe that we were created by God as human beings, and that
God created the universe in six days? Or do you believe in the Big
Bang theory, or in Darwin’s theory of evolution?
Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) is the English naturalist who
formulated the theory of evolution by natural selection, expounded
upon this in his famous book "On the Origin of Species" (1889) and
applied it to man in "The Descent of Man" (1871).
For more than a century, Darwin’s theory has dominated scientific
thinking.
In the past 50 years a revival of creationism and catastrophism has
gathered momentum. Many states, including Iowa, Illinois, Kansas,
Kentucky, Arkansas, Alabama and Utah, have been considering whether to
require creation as an alternative to evolution in science curricula.
At Butler University, the debate is open and vibrant. Every Tuesday
evening, interesting classroom conflicts take place in the Krannert
Room at Clowes Memorial Hall.
