In the News: Tulsa Park Board Reverses Decision On ' Creation' Exhibit At Tulsa Zoo |
From the article:
-------------------------------------------------------
It was a packed house at a special meeting of the Tulsa park board
Thursday morning, as they voted on whether to allow a Christian
display on creationism at the Tulsa Zoo.
The controversy started when a Christian group noticed an elephant
statue at the zoo, which they say represents the Hindu god, Ganesha.
News on 6 reporter Steve Berg was at the meeting and says the zoo
issue got a little wild.
The park board did not allow any public comment, which didn't sit well
with the public. In fact, one man, who appeared to be against the
Creation exhibit, walked out, but it was the exhibit's supporters who
had more to be upset about.
In the end, the board voted to reverse their earlier approval of the
Creation exhibit and to keep the elephant statue. Dan Hicks: "The zoo
has basically put themselves right back in the position they were when
the petitioners started this." Dan Hicks, who spearheaded the
creationism display, doesn't understand why their display is being
censored while others are let in. "They have religious displays; that
is not debatable." Tulsa Mayor Bill LaFortune agrees.

From the article:
------------------------------------------------
TULSA, Okla. -- A city board reversed direction on Thursday and
rejected plans to add a creationist exhibit to the Tulsa Zoo.
Board members voted 3-1 against installing an exhibit on the origin of
life from the Bible. The vote, made at a special meeting of the board,
reversed a June 7 decision to add a Genesis story to the zoo.
Dale McNamara, who voted against the display at the June meeting and
again on Thursday, told the packed house of onlookers that she
carefully considered her vote.
"My 'no' vote was, on reflection, absolutely correct," she said.
As one of only nine "living museums" in the country, the Tulsa Zoo
should develop displays that explain the cultural significance of
animals, McNamara said. She said an elephant-like stone statue near
the elephant exhibit fit within that mission.
The statue has been one of the key items in the fight over Genesis
display. Tulsa resident Dan Hicks had argued for the creationism
display as a balance to other religious items at the zoo.
Hicks, an architect, had agreed to pay for a Genesis exhibit and came
to Thursday's meeting with a 5-by-3-foot plan for the display as he
envisioned it.
Tulsa Park and Recreation Board Chairman Walter Helmerich said he felt
board members had been deceived by Hicks. Meeting at the Tulsa Garden
Center, Helmerich read into the record a 1995 agreement between Hicks
and then-Mayor Susan Savage.
In the letter, Hicks said a sign near the zoo entrance noting that
evolution was a scientific theory explaining the development of life
was sufficient to meet his religious concerns over the zoo.

I wonder if the zoo has an aquarium. Perhaps they could bolt a Jesus
fish to the wall of it.

Since the elephant monument was by the elephants they should put the
Creationism monument by the Chimpanzees since they are a close relative.

Mr. Hicks is really stretching the facts to fit is case.
Calling any representation of an elephant an image of the
Hindu god Ganesha would be like calling any picture of a
young man a representation of the Christ. However, this
whole trumped-up incident is sure be preached at yet
another case of anti-Christian bias from every
fundamentalist pulpit for years to come.
Why don't the overwhelming majority of sane Christians
do something about the very small minority of kooks
like Mr. Hicks, who are giving their religion a bad name?
Could they at least publicly disavow idiots like these
and turn him out of office at the next election?

From what I gather, they don't have religious displays that try to
pass themselves off as reality. The creationism exhibit would be
something completely new in that regard.

Such a good point that it bears repeating: the other exhibits aren't trying
pass themselves off as an unltimate religious truth, they are merely
depicting the way in which various animals have been revered as the icons of
various religions around the world. If the cretinists want to do this. Then
they should ask that a manger scene be put up, or a scene depicting a dove,
or the 'lamb of god', or better still, the 'mutated' hippopotomus
represntation of God that is portrayed on South Park. I think that would be
the most apt depiction.
From what I gather, they don't have religious displays that try to
pass themselves off as reality. The creationism exhibit would be

They apparently have several popular representations of
elephants in the exhibit, including the Ganesh and a
REPUBLICAN ELEPHANT. I haven't heard them whining about
THAT one-sided display.

From that link:
"In Tulsa, Mr. Hicks said, the dominant view is that God created the
heavens and the earth in six days and rested on the seventh - then
created Adam and Eve."
Mr Hicks needs to study his bible a little more closely; it says god
created A&E on the sixth day, not after the seventh.
Also from that link:
"We have a heritage here," he said. "Our national motto is 'in God we
trust.' I don't understand why we have a problem including creationism
in a discussion of origins."
It's not surprizing he doesn't understand why there's a problem, when
it's his ignorance that is the problem.
