India worried about flying saucers and lasers? |
http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/3667.asp
The article is about the use of military lasers however apparently
people in India are FUCKING MORONS! when it comes to science and
thinks like flying saucer notions.

People in india are generally better educated than most - but the guy
who wrote this piece is obviously scientifically illiterate and away
with the fairies.
Solid state lasers are NOT used as millitary weapons and CANNOT be used
to punch holes in steel plate etc.
Solid state laser can be used for CD/DVD reading and writing and for
those laser pointers.
For military industrial uses you need gas/chemical lasers.
To get a lot of power out of a laser you have to pump even more in.
(they are inherrently very inefficient - 1%-5% is an excellent
efficiency for a Laser!)
To get enough power out of a solid state laser to do some damage - you
have to put in so much energy that you vaporise the device.
Those little 1mW, 2 mW or hold onto your hats 5mW!(thousanth of a Watt)
lasers consume 500 - 1000 mW to make them operate.
The energy that doesnt emerge in the beam (95-99%) turns to heat.
With a gas laser the Lasing material is pumped through the Laser and
thus continuously carries away the excess heat.
The military use of Lasers (apart from blinding people and sensors)is
problematcal for many reasons
(1) Generating sufficiently powerfull output without vapourising your
lasing device.
(2) Carrying a big enough generator around to power the laser.
(Mounting it on a VERY large Tank an Aircraft carrier or a 747 or
similar.)
(3) Propagating the resulting beam through the atmosphere.
(Lasers would work great in outer space - thus sattelites shooting down
ICBM's in their "cruise" phase was an idea all the rage for a while.)
Oh and yes there are no flying saucers to worry about.
8-)
Mark.

:
I wouldn't put it as strongly as that.
A moron is someone who is incapable of learning.
Most of these credulous individuals are simply uneducated, usually
through lack of opportunity.
And I don't think that mass credulity about such notions is restricted
to India.
I think you can guess as to which country my implication is referring.
That said, the members of the Indian Skeptics group have their work
cut out for them!
