Indy Driver Complains Fremale Racer Has "Unfair Advantage" |
In related news, NBA players charge that Shaq has an unfair advantage
for being too tall:

Gordon, a former open-wheel driver now in NASCAR, contends that
Patrick is at an advantage over the rest of the competitors because
she only weighs 100 pounds. Because all the cars weigh the same,
Patrick's is lighter on the race track.
"The lighter the car, the faster it goes," Gordon said. "Do the math.
Put her in the car at her weight, then put me or Tony Stewart in the
car at 200 pounds and our car is at least 100 pounds heavier.
"I won't race against her until the IRL does something to take that
advantage away."
.....Although her rivals in Sunday's race have said she doesn't have a
huge advantage, pole-sitter Tony Kanaan told reporters he would like
the Indy Racing League to look into the issue.

It's an idiotic argument irrespective of Patrick's size. One could be the
greatest driver in the history of the universe and it wouldn't make a bit of
difference if the car underneath you is inferior. Patrick (as well as the
eventual winner and several other individuals) had an opportunity to win the

The argument has merit. Some other series weigh the car+driver. Of course,
choosing to single out Patrick instead of the many smallish guys who have
driven over the years is pretty ugly.
One could be the
greatest driver in the history of the universe and it wouldn't make a bit

Obviously, but part of an inferior car is one that is heavier than another.
Patrick (as well as the
eventual winner and several other individuals) had an opportunity to win
the
race because she had superior technology at her disposal.
Superior to what? There are specific rules that allow only a certain amount
of technological innovation. The cars are rather similar in terms of
technology and many (teammates') are essentially identical. Automobile
racing is more than a technological competition, although that aspect
certainly exists to a degree.
We're talking
about a "sport" in which it is well understood that only a fraction of the
competitors have a legitimate shot at winning,
FYI, that fraction can be rather large. Besides, how is this different from
any other "sport"? When was the last time the Cubs won the world series
again? When was the last time the Cardinals were a good NFL team? It's also
well understood that a huge fraction of entrants in the NYC marathon had a
legitimate shot at winning; should the rest of us have gone home?
and that the balance of the
field is only there to provide opportunities for spectacular crashes.
If that is your understanding, it's rather lacking. The balance of the field
is out there to compete, as in any sport.

He would kill you in such a competition. Really. Driving is a skill.

Yes.

Obviously, but part of an inferior car is one that is heavier than

A much huger part is the team you're driving for, quite obviously.
Patrick (as well as the
eventual winner and several other individuals) had an opportunity to win
the
race because she had superior technology at her disposal.
Superior to what?
Superior to most of the cars in the field, as is ridiculously obvious from
the results over the years.
There are specific rules that allow only a certain amount
of technological innovation. The cars are rather similar in terms of
technology and many (teammates') are essentially identical. Automobile
racing is more than a technological competition, although that aspect
certainly exists to a degree.
We're talking
about a "sport" in which it is well understood that only a fraction of
the

FYI, that fraction can be rather large.
Um, no. Looking at the past 20 winners
5 started from the pole,
8 started in the first row,
11 started in the first two rows,
all but two started in the front half of the field. And of course, that
stat can be a bit deceptive, sometimes one of the favorites qualifies lower
than he/she should have, like Wheldon.
Besides, how is this different from
any other "sport"?
I don't care, the issue is Gordon's stupidity, not what happens in baseball.
When was the last time the Cubs won the world series
again? When was the last time the Cardinals were a good NFL team? It's
also
well understood that a huge fraction of entrants in the NYC marathon had a
legitimate shot at winning; should the rest of us have gone home?
Did you ***** and moan about the alleged advantages of the winner?
and that the balance of the
field is only there to provide opportunities for spectacular crashes.
If that is your understanding, it's rather lacking. The balance of the
field
is out there to compete, as in any sport.
Yeah, that's why the announcers spent half their syllables yelling at the
slower cars to get out of the way of Danica and the other fast drivers.

She led for 19 laps, including until some seven laps from the end, even
after seeming to go to hell in a hand basket earlier - but she had fuel
problems at the end. She still managed a fourth-place finish, however.
Kanaan was eighth! I'd be curious to know what the weights were of the
people who finished in the first seven places. That information has to
be somewhere online right?

Weight or no weight advantage, as a rookie she and her team did one hell of
a job overcoming all the rookie mistakes she made to finish where she did.
That was no mean driving job to keep that car out of trouble after getting
tangled up with matsuura, it appeared she never even lifted, it also appears
that she has some decent driving talent.
Good job on her!

Oh yeah. I bet she can squeeze an extra .5 mph out of her machine. So
why aren't these yahoos urging IRL to mandate the same weight load for
all cars, making everyone in the race add sand bags for all drivers
lighter than the heaviest MAN in the race?
Twits.

In Formula 1, this isn't an issue; the car and driver combined
must weigh a minimum of 600kg. A smaller driver and a lighter
car are more desirable because a team must add ballast to get up
to the 600kg mark. Ballast goes in the bottom of the car, hence
it lowers the center of gravity, allowing the car to corner at
higher speeds.

few weeks ago and sits tied for second in that championship.
As well, former "race bunny" and model Keiko Ihara of Japan is
doing well in the British F3 series and may get a test drive
with an F1 team, and Jutta Kleinschmidt is two-time winner of
the Paris-Dakar rally. Michelle Mouton finished second in the
World Rally Championships in *1980*.
It just goes to show that if women have the same opportunities
as men, they have the same success. It's not a lack of talent
or a lack of aggression that holds women back in racing, it's
a lack of money.
....Although her rivals in Sunday's race have said she doesn't have a
huge advantage, pole-sitter Tony Kanaan told reporters he would like
the Indy Racing League to look into the issue.
True, she does have an advantage. Roughly every gallon of fuel
carried adds 1/10th of a second per lap on an oval, and Patrick
carries much less dead weight. If they ran 200 laps of green
flag racing during the Indy 500 (yeah, right) she'd gain 20-40
seconds. They do laps at Indianapolis in 45 seconds.
Car and driver weight has been a bone of contention in the IRL
and CART for years, but there has never been such a small driver
who was a potential winner. Sarah Fisher, Janet Guthrie, and
Lyn St. James were never a threat.
Usually, the difference in weights are small, or one specific
driver is grossly overweight and nobody takes pity on him. O_-

Possibly. Then again, there are some few people who are
pretty lean at 250 lbs. Bodies come in lots of shapes and
sizes. But if weight becomes an issue, there will just be
more diminutive drivers. Nobody screams about small jockeys
having an unfair advantage. There just aren't any big ones.
Conversely, I don't think anybody gets to be an NBA center
who's shorter than 6'10", nor are there any people in an NFL
front 7 weighing less than 230. Hey, maybe somebody should
file an ADA suit about all of this.

So that's why she didn't win

Like many of you, we tuned in Sunday to the Indianapolis 500
hoping to see Scottsdale's Danica Patrick make history.
Or maybe just to see Danica Patrick, period.
Anyway, she did make history, sort of, becoming the first woman
ever to lead at Indy and finishing fourth for team owners Bobby
Rahal and David Letterman.
But, alas, running on fumes in the final laps, she was unable
to claim victory. So with apologies to Letterman, we give you
Danica's "Top 10 Reasons I didn't win the Indy 500."
10. Felt so guilty over Robby Gordon's complaint about a weight
advantage, I pigged out on a Monster Thickburger at Hardee's
on Saturday night.
9. Like everybody else these days, I was just trying to milk a
little more out of a tank of gas.
8. Somebody forgot to tell Dan Wheldon that a woman winning at
Indianapolis would do wonders for the Indy Racing League's
visibility.
7. I really needed more time on the Scottsdale stretch of the
Loop 101 to prepare for those crazy high speeds and daredevil
drivers.
6. Buddy Rice forgot to mention those Rahal/Letterman Hondas have
a tendency to stall in the pits.
5. I was scared to death that winning would mean an appearance on
Oprah, and everybody knows what the boss thinks of her.
4. Dave looked so goofy in that racing get-up, I couldn't stop
giggling.
3. Would have hated for everybody to find out in victory lane
that I'm lactose intolerant.
2. Hey, I'm a 23-year-old rookie.
1. Probably should not have attempted to re-apply lipstick before
restart on Lap 155.
