Object: Influence of a human life
Foreword of this English version of the text (November, 2005) This text
is based on a very cutted excerpt from the reflection essay written by me to
pass the course lectured by the Finnish philosopher Esa Saarinen in
spring term 2004 at the Helsinki University of Technology. The name of
the course was Philosophy and System thinking. My views about ethics
and religion have gone upside-down after writing the original essay.
However, I think these thoughts are still worth reading.
When stepping down from commuter buses I have the habit of taking a look
towards some another passenger of the bus a second into her/his eyes, -
and secretly thinking that by looking him/her a second I have an effect on
future of the another passenger, his relatives and friends. What
children they will have etc. This is because I delay their journey
a bit by stepping out of the bus. Therefore, I have an effect
on their cause-and-effect-nets. Although this is not scientifically
unfalsiable, it could be said that position vectors of the atoms of
the other passengers would move differently (as functions of time)
if I was not in the same bus with them.
In rare matters people are qual with all other people. One of them
is that everyone dies sometime. But another matter is that
everyone's life affects on the future of humankind. In this
others are more qual than others. For example, the US president
affects the future of human race more quickly than a begger
in the developing country. But if the existence and influence
of this hypotetical begger were taken off from the
cause-and-effect-net of the reality, in the future different
people would be born in the world. Everyone has influence
on the future of mankind and the end of the history of the
universe.
The purpose of this article was originally to write down a bit of a
strong basis for the meaning of a human life, whatever misfortunes
there come in life. It is the purpose to write down my own
basis of the meaning of my life. I propose these ideas to everyone,
but I have had specially in mind the people who have big problems
in their lifes. The unemployed, physically or mentally ill
people etc.
As the point of departure I have the assumption that in reality
it does not happen that kind of things that supernatural
forces or higher powers interact with the cause-and-effect-nets
of the reality in that way that the influence of a human being
into reality would be cancelled.
As I in the introduction example proposed the basic existence of
a human being (to say nothing of his/her actions) affects the
future of mankind very much. The birth and fertilization of
a human individual is a sum of all that happened in world
in the past. With our thoughts and actions we continuously
have influence on who will be born in this world in the
future. For example, if there existed not me in this world,
after 200 years there would be different people living
on this earth than there will be now when I exist in
this world. This is, of course, the same with every individual in
this world.
It is would be natural if we felt more brotherhood and unity
with other human beings and even animals because we continiously
interact with other people's lifes. - And If you now
now hunt a fly it can have a effect what child your friend
will have after a year. Our influence on the world is simply
billions of times greater than we normally tend to think.
A human being is like a very nearsighted, almost a blind god who
does not know what she/he creates.
I am continuously conscious I interact with other people on
the future. This is basis of my world-view. This is
a strong "everything affects everything" thinking. I am
one of those ( & other people) who create the future all the time
of my life. A geat loss now could create a very happy happening
in the future. And vice-versa. All people and events in the past
are significant for the sake of the history of the future human reality.
My hint is: Live your life all the time conscious that you all
the time affect on the future. The future of yourself and all
other people on the world. On even those that will be born
in the world in the future.

Jarmo Antero Manninen <jmannine@vipunen.hut.fi> suddenly spluttered:

it does not happen that kind of things that supernatural
forces or higher powers interact with the cause-and-effect-nets
of the reality in that way that the influence of a human being
into reality would be cancelled.

Uh?
Your english vocabulary is good, Jarmo, but the grammar, particularly
in this sentence is such that it has no meaning. I realise that
Finnish is a very different language from English (or indeed any other
European language). Perhaps you could get somebody to translate it if
they understand what you are trying to say.
No disrespect.
