Infomercials |
Insidious things. I see them often when I get up at/before daylight to tend
to young master stinky britches. I really must try to convince him to sleep
in, but I digress... It struck me today that infomercials and
televangelists share the same timeslot, and both have the same agenda: To
sell worthless crap to the unwashed masses at a ridiculously high price.
Sadly, it must be effective, because we can't seem to get rid of either of
them.
*sigh*
I guess that as long as there are people in the world who believe that
buying an "Abtastic" will make them look like the bodybuilder in the
infomercial, we'll have people willing to buy into religions.

Ah, but it WILL work -- if the person uses the machine
faithfully for the months required to produce signficant
improvement. Sit-ups would do the job, too, of course, and they
cost nothing.
Alas, our buyer will not exercise regularly. That's not what he

Especially if you get one of those vibrating belts to do the exercise

They made you lighter by about $49.95 instantly.

None at all. The realisation that televangelists and infomercials share so
much in common, and both continue to thrive, has just driven home the fact
that we're always going to be hip deep in god-botherers. It's depressing.

And to me, the worst thing of all is that the infomercials have
replaced old movies on TV. In a "Dexter's Lab" cartoon, there was a
reference to the old "Late Late Late Show" and it went right over my
daughter's head. "Late night? Yeah, dad-that's when you turn on the DVD
player." The girl has never seen "Casablanca" or "The Thin Man".
OTOH, the local PBS station ran "The Manchurian Candidate" a few weeks
back. She sat through it with me. Reluctantly at first, but after it
was over, she said "I never knew there were movies like that..." Hear
that, Hollywood? Ya wanna fill those empty theatres? Try writing a
decent script *before* you plan the special effects & see what happens.

Fortunately, there's usually an old black and white movie on the ABC
(Australian Broadcasting Commission - government funded, not commercial) at
that hour. Mostly they're from BBC studios, though. Not quite on a par
with "Casablanca", but often quite entertaining, and always totally devoid
of special effects. Hollywood could even take a lesson from mediocre BBC
productions these days.

unfortunately it seems that PBS/BBC type shows have recently taken up
special effects...some of the shows that used to be easy to watch are
getting quite annoying.

Indeed. As I was telling a young friend of mine, it was far
easier to find movies on late-night TV when there were only 13-
25 channels available, than now, when there are a hundred. This
is doubly annoying in light of the fact that we pay cable
providers to pump this bilge into our homes.

oh, sorry, I should have snipped everything after your first line:

seems rather odd to me that you have the TV on when there is only
insidious programming on. I leave the box off in such cases...which is

We get two channels, but if we turn off all the computer related
electronics in the house we can also recieve PBS from a distant town.
