Inmate gets eight-year sentence for strangling cellmate

A schizophrenic man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2003
strangling of a fellow inmate at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre
was given an eight-year sentence yesterday.
Because of his mental state, Justice Lynn Ratushny recommended Daniel
Labelle, 31, serve his sentence at the Oak Ridge facility at the
Penetanguishene psychiatric hospital. Mr. Labelle was credited with
three years for pre-trial custody. Where he serves his remaining five
year sentence will be decided by the Ontario Review Board, who will
meet with Mr. Labelle on a yearly basis to assess his mental health and
the risk he poses to the community.
Mr. Labelle admitted last month to killing Robert Hatton, 46, a
convicted pedophile who was jailed for breaching long-term offender
conditions.
An agreed statement of facts read out in court revealed that the two
men shared a cell in a maximum security area for inmates in protective
custody.
When Mr. Labelle told prison staff he couldn't bunk with a pedophile
his request for a transfer to another cell was denied.

I care far more about the people the murdered man left behind. His
wife? Children? Parents? He made a conscious decision to break the law
(whether it's molestation, armed robbery, embezzlement, rape, etc),
KNOWING the possible consequences. KNOWING the dangers. And apparently,
since he DID break the law, he decided those consequences were either
trivial or agreeable enough that they were worth the "joy" of his
actions.
How 'bout this? A guy decides to fire off illegal fireworks in his
backyard- we're talking the big fuckers - and he blows his hand off . .
.. are we supposed to feel very sorry for him? He KNEW it was a
possible consequence (that's presumably why the damn things are illegal
in the first place), but he didn't CARE. Now let's say that he didn't
get HIS hand blown off, but his kid's hand - are we supposed to feel
sorry for him (him, ***** no! Kid, ***** yes!) . . . he made the
conscious decision to light the fucking things, and the possible
consequence was that someone ELSE got hurt. He knew, and he didn't give
a shitola. So again, are we supposed to feel sorry for HIM?
Like the guy in the news item, he fucked a kid, hurt his family,
KNOWING the consequences. Jail . . . murder . . . etc. To him, it was
worth it.
At the very least, as it's supposed to, this guy's story can serve as a
cautionary tale. Don't break the law. EOS.

The point of my post, however, was that people in our society are
constantly warned about breaking the law. How sorry for Ted Bundy did
you feel when he was electrocuted for the murder of those young girls?
How sorry are you for the armed robber who gets shot to death during a
bank robbery??
But the difference between the murderer, the child molester, and myself
is that I choose NOT to break the law. Even though I have urges to hurt
people, I control those urges and stay on the safe side of society's
mores.
They (whether molester, murderer, or robber) made CONSCIOUS decisions
that the momentary gratification was well worth the price of the
consequences, much less worth the pain it causes others.
Example: If I went out and blasted an entire fast food restaurant to
death with a shotgun and committed suicide by cop, how sorry would you
feel for me?? How much? A little? A lot? I would have to assume that
you would think "Well, gee, I'm sure she knew it was wrong and what
could happen." Or would you think "Oh that poor woman?"
If you feel overly sorry for those who knowingly make choices that
purposefully hurt others, then you're rooting for the wrong side.

Well, that little comment made no sense.
I'm not complaining about murder, nor defending it.
The only time that I can get emotionally involved is when the offense
involves children. So if someone goes out and kills a child, yes, I
can get pissed and emotional about it. An old lady? Nope. I can't do
it. Not that I don't want to, I can't.
To me, things are rather black and white . . . you do A, then B
happens, then C . . . I don't see the human element in ANY of it. I
don't see, "well, you know, he was going through a rough time." or "If
only we had known, we could have helped." - though I CAN fake those
words quite easily in order to be below the radar, as it were - I just
see breaking the law -> going to jail -> getting murdered by another
inmate -> as a logical progression when you look at the possibilities.
In addition, it makes sense and is logical when you consider that child
sex offenders DO occupy the lowest rung in prison. They ARE universally
hated by the other kinds of inmates. And THAT increases the likelihood
that getting murdered will happen.
So, in my mind (damaged that it may be), when someone molests a child,
they MUST have considered those possibilities. And they STILL made the
choice to commit the crime. If HE'S fine with it, why shouldn't we be?
Why should WE bemoan his punishment when HE was fine with it? When HE
decided it (molesting a child - or really, breaking any serious law) it
was WORTH the punishment??
Now, let's say that while driving, I spill coffee in my lap . . . I
have a few choices . . . I can immediately divert my attention to my
burning lap and/or the mess it made - or I can stand the pain and the
mess and pull off the road.
Now let's say that I immediately diverted my attention to my lap and
mess . . . and I get hit by another car. Do I have the RIGHT to stand
there and be pissed at the other driver? Do I have a RIGHT to be pissed
at the damage to my car? No, I don't. I set forth a an action that
caused REactions. REactions that I should have anticipated . . . same
with the molester.
Not sure if all of that makes sense . . . especially to someone who
has a conscience. But to someone like me, it makes perfect sense. : )

There is no International definition of the term "child" witrh regards to
sex. The age of consent ranges from 12 - with no enforcement for those who
have sex with younger children - on up. Thus there is no International
definition of what constitutres child molestation. I would submit, however,
that forcing ANYONE, regardless of age, to engage in sex is molestation.
