We created the problem. Al Qaeda has moved into Iraq *because* the
war created conditions that made it favorable.
I'm not calling for us to leave. I'm very conflicted about that. On
the one hand, it would be a hit on our international prestige--I'm
using the word "prestige" as an international relations term of art;
it basically means credibility and the ability to influence events
because you have it. It would also leave a balkanized Iraq open to
becoming a base for terrorism and radical Islamist governments. On
the other hand, we may be there for ten years and still see those
outcomes. I can't help but wonder if it's Vietnam in 1965.
One thing's for sure. Bush created this mess. It can all be laid at
his feet. We are less secure today because of his actions.
Iraq wasn't a threat to us and they shouldn't have been a target in
our war on terror. It was a terrible mistake to go to war there. It
will cost us dearly.

True, I think, but there is a school of thought that suggests that was
precisely the objective on the basis "better there than here," as if a
network of networks were not capable of doing more than one ting at a
time.

Internationalize. Immediately.
The big sticking point is that we, as usual, want to be in the driver's
seat. Even Bush's latest proposal is an international effort with *us "in
charge."
Drivel. We don't have to be in control of *everything.
Until we're ready to concede actual *power, the rest of the world is

A fine quote from Teddy. Yes this is a mess. But IMO there probably is
no easy way back.
IMO there is a chance that Saddam might be replased by something worse
if USA would leave before theyr work is finished. If someone with Al
Qaeta leaning would get into power in Iraq, we really would see some
trouble in the Middle East.
They´d revive the WMD programs for sure, as well as without doubt make
plans for worse things to come. So it looks like a royal mess.

It makes me laugh. Or would, if I were prone to laughing. We (Britain)
are in a media frenzy over an inquiry which is being held at the moment
to determine just who drove one of our weapons experts to "apparent
suicide" (note it is always "apparent" suicide). No-one, however, is
now interested in an inquiry into why we blindly followed the US
administration into invading a country we had no particular reason to
invade. Forty-five minutes? Utter garbage.
Where are these weapons?
And Bush? Bush stands there burbling into the screen ("mah feller
'mer'cans") and asking the rest of the world to come and 'contribute' to
the security situation in a country that HE insisted on invading in the
first place. The words "bitten", "more" and "chew" leap to mind. And
to watch Blair yesterday, fawning and simpering at a conference about
child protection... "Any money invested on protecting children is money
well spent"... He so wants us to believe he is caring and
compassionate, and that he loves children - as long as they are not
Iraqi children. Throw THEM a couple of Tomahawks, and that should be
fine.
Yes, yes, I know it does not do to cry over spilt milk, and that we
should deal with the situation that faces us NOW - and I have no doubt
that we will. But we have already outstayed our welcome with the
Iraqis. The euphoria of overthrowing Saddam Hussein has died off, and
now they face the reality of living in a post-war country, still ruled
by their "liberators".
Personally, I will continue to think of Tony Blair as the dishonest
leader who conned the British people into grudging acceptance of an
unnecessary war, and Bush as the pretender President who did likewise to
the people of America.
