Object: Intelligent, Educated People Read the Bible
Even the atheists can't argue with that.
http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/8/42006h.asp
....A survey of English professors at 34 top U.S. colleges and universities
yielded a surprising result: Almost every single one said that young people
need to know more about the Bible if they were to adequately understand both
the classics of Western literature and contemporary work. "Loss of
recognition [of the Bible] in the last three or four decades has put much of
Western literature beyond the reach of many readers," said Dr. David Lyle
Jeffrey, who is distinguished professor of literature and the humanities at
Baylor University. What surprised Dr. Marie Wachlin, who did the research
for the study on behalf of the Bible Literacy Project, was how much
agreement there was among the 39 English professors surveyed. "The virtual
unanimity and depth of their responses on this question were striking,"
Wachlin said. "The Bible is not only a sacred scripture to millions of
Americans, it is also arguably, as one professor put it, the most
influential text in all of Western culture." The professors who were
surveyed teach at universities which included Yale, Harvard, Stanford and
Princeton. The report suggested that high schools make available to students
courses that would promote Bible literacy.

The problem is this article seems to indicate
otherwise. Lots of smart young educated people
are not reading the bible. And they can get by
with that, despite the handwringing.
One can get by with not reading Milton, or Bunyon.
What contemporary work do we need to know
that demands a bible?
When we look what bible reading did for George Bush,
its a postive good that more people do not read
this book of tall tales unless being taught the bible
means being taught why it is also false, untrue and
causes people to be stupid.
It as a book is a source of infection of bad and
evil ideas. People would be far better off reading
Darwin and similar works.
Since it seems many people cannot read the bible
without becoming metally deranged, the less people
who read it, the better.

that demands a bible?

Demands? Why do you think everything is a demand in life?

When we look what bible reading did for George Bush,
its a postive good that more people do not read
this book of tall tales unless being taught the bible
means being taught why it is also false, untrue and
causes people to be stupid.

Weird.

It as a book is a source of infection of bad and
evil ideas. People would be far better off reading
Darwin and similar works.

I have read both.

Since it seems many people cannot read the bible
without becoming metally deranged, the less people
who read it, the better.

Weird.
The fewer that read it, the more ignorance there is amongst us.

What about the other 99.99% of the world's population?

You mean the people that the person you quoted missed?

No, the rest of us, who are either educated and not religious or dumb
as a bag of spanners, probably ineducable and as superstitious as you.

You are saying that 99.99 percent of the world is educated and not
religious?

No. Pity you don't understand English, but, frankly, amigo, that is not
my problem.

And some persons, like you Johnny, avoid reality at all costs

and libraries full of similar fiction are for entertainment. The bible
is mythology; so reading the bible gives you knowledge of mythology
and folklore, nothing more.

There are things which haev very little benefit to persons.

*****. It is true. People who study the Bible as well as the 'secular'

Ok, so a person who reads the bible can be knowledgeable about myths
and folklore. Not unlike claiming that someone who reads Harry Potter
or other fiction has more knowledge...about fiction.

Possessing more knowledge than others is what can elevate a person above the
persons who know less.

So, being a bible reader yourself, why can't you get over the hump and
be elevated above the level of barely literate fool?
Reading the bible certainly didn't elevate you above being barely
literate.

If they fail to study the Bible they will still lack knowledge of it.

What's so important about studying mythology? It's obviously good to
know as much as possible but bible mythology does not make you more
educated, or "elevated above" anyone else.
Do you _really_ believe theres any truth to fiction about demons,
wizards, gods, devils, parted seas, an ark the size of Delaware,
magic, prayer/begging, burning dung sacrifices, sky pixies, virgin
conceptions, walking on water and some imaginary god that allegedly
created man in its image then decided to kill every living thing
including those in its own image?
If so, you're gullible, naive, easily mislead and barely able to
function on your own.
The religious con-artists delight in programming vegetables like you
to think and believe whatever they want you to.

There is no way to know as much as persons who study both the Bible and all
other materials.
Ignoring the Bible makes you less knowledgable than those who do study the
Bible who also study that which you study.

Knowledgeable about demons, wizards, spells, gods, devils,
prayer/begging, an imaginary god that loves the smell of burning dung.
You call that important knowledge? It's no more important than Harry
Potter.

I studied both.

Based on your archived usenet rants you haven't studied much of
anything other than the bible.
You bark endlessly about the Constitution and obviously know next to
nothing about it.
You screech on and on about law, then continue typing and prove that
you know almost nothing about it.
In your fucked up little head you think you can dictate to people what
the law and constitution mean, when in reality you are clueless and
clinging to some old beliefs, completely inflexible and stubborn.
You've given quite a glimpse of what goes on in that scary world
inside your head, where your version of reality contains different
interpretations of law and the constitution, and you post to usenet as
if you were some kind of lawmaker or appeals court judge. Earth to
Johnny, you're neither.

Error. What I studied is known by both groups.
Therefore, what I studied pertains to both groups.
While you neglect one group and insult them with regard to their knowledge I
show you that I place importance in both areas.
So, take a back seat.

You know Johnny, studying ancient and primitive people and their
cultures and religions and mythology can be interesting, maybe even
amusing.
Where you fail is the part where fiction should be separated from
fact.
The "back seat" is for you brain-dead theists who can't keep fiction,
mythology, folklore and campfire ***** stories in their proper
perspective and insist on referring to it as "truth" "knowledge",
"science" and the "word of gawd".

Your problem is that the fiction you have read is known to be fiction to
virtually everyone, some of which I have read myself, and your stage act
that the Bible is fiction makes you into someone that the persons who
believe the Bible to be true will not endear themselves to.
Your position behind me is warranted.

Implying that the bible is absolute truth, what a joke!
You've proven, in archived posts, to be a hateful, uneducated, bigoted
jackass as well as a liar and hypocrite.

So, why do you speculate that the Bible is not true?

You have it backwards. Speculation is assuming the bible to be "true"
simply because some religious con-artists, or your parents, tell you
so.
That the bible is "true" is pure speculation unless and until proven
otherwise, and after a couple of centuries af flailing, lying,
crusading and burning people alive christianity has failed to prove
that the bible is anything more than campfire ***** stories.

Your task is to prove that religion has no truth of knowledge in it, if you
expect to be believed.

You are claiming that the bible is "true" knowledge. The burden of
proof is upon you, deciever. Christianity has had a couple of thousand
years of trying, including brutally converting people, and has failed
miserably. So you'd better get busy if you plan on substantiating your
claims.

...A survey of English professors at 34 top U.S. colleges and universities
yielded a surprising result: Almost every single one said that young
people need to know more about the Bible if they were to adequately
understand both the classics of Western literature and contemporary work.

Huh. Like we need more -- ahem -- "appreciation" of murder, adultery,
theft, warfare, rape, etc...
