Object: Interesting scientific position from the Vatican
Hi,
I read this today in The Guardian - it's the the "Bad Science" column
of The Guardian's weekly science supplement "Life". "Bad Science" is
usually concerned with general scientific charlatanry, such as miracle
diets and advertising claims based on scientific-sounding nonsense:
"Pope of Popes, the People's Pope, Pope John Paul the Great. But to
many he will perhaps be remembered as the African Aids Victims' Pope.
Who could forget Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the
Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, telling us all that HIV
could pass through impermeable latex condoms? "The Aids virus is 450
times smaller than the spermatozoon," he said. "The spermatozoon can
easily pass through the 'net' formed by the condom." The devil sent
half of all new HIV infections to people under the age of 25, most of
them women in developing countries, to taunt him, but JPII steadfastly
presided over cardinals, bishops, priests and nuns in four continents,
spreading the message that HIV can pass through tiny holes in condoms,
discouraging use of barrier contraception, and making this a better
world for us all. Bravo."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/life/badscience/story/0,12980,1453310,00.html
The tone is, as you can see, somewhat less than positive towards the
Catholic Church's approach here. I just wonder how, when this is
scientifically-provable nonsense, the Cardinal and his ilk justify to
their consciences standing in the way of the only really effective
method of slowing the Afrian AIDS epidemic? Or maybe they don't care
to examine the actual evidence, and thus can adopt an
internally-convincing doublethink...

While there are no doubt some folks on the dark continent who may have
passed up o using a condom because of this misinformation, let's face the
real truth here. The dirt-worlders that inhabit most of modern Africa are
intent on fucking themselves to death and the unlimited availabilty of
prohylactics are not going to solve the problem if they're too dumb or too
"macho" to use them.

I donlt know, but it is nice to see some dissent form the prevailing
pope view. I think , IIRC, they had some sort of justification, but
whther it was just that condoms are often used incorrectly and are
inneficient that way, or something genuine, I don't know

condoms can be used for (evil) contraception, so they'll say whatever
it takes to get folks to not use them.
