So what exactly are the odds of China making a play
for Mongolia any time soon?

You may be correct, provided that the political system with a primary
objective of "money, now, as much as possible" in both countries stays
the same. But if you read your second sentence again, you will see the
total and unbelievable stupidity of such a war. The resources (like
fossil fuel) are *finite*. Whoever would win such a war would only push
the day they run out a little in the future. It just doesn't sound
promising to fight a war just to avoid finding a different solution now,
when you know that you will have to find it later anyways.
And a different question about a war US/China: Let's assume that China
goes after Mongolia, for whatever mysterious reason (WMD?). Would the
defender of freedom, the bringer of democracy and the arch-enemy of
communism move one finger for Mongolia?

Tibet is rich in mineral resources but I think that was incidental.
The Chinese have politically regard Tibet as an integral part of
greater China - and if you look at a map you can see why - and so they
make it a part of National pride to annex it and part of National
pride to disregard any protest about it.
As far as I know they don't have or have not had that attitude to
Mongolia (as far as I know they have not had a history of making that
claim.)
So are you saying that they do have or often claim a
traditional/historical claim to Mongolia?
I am just asking.
