Internationalize Jerusalem |
Perhaps no greater tribute could be made to the memory of His Holiness
Pope John Paul II, than to internationalize the city of Jerusalem. The
city, of course, would continue to be administered by Israel, but under
some jurisdiction of the UN. The reverence each faith holds for the
city is without question. The pontiff was a man who believed people of
all faiths could live in harmony; what better place on earth to attempt
to achieve this ideal. If peace could come to this region, it may
create a domino effect throughout the world.

Yes, Pontiff was such a nice guy that we should internationalize Rome and the
Vatican, to make sure his memory lives on.

If major world powers or the Arabs wanted Jerusalem to be
internationalized, then they should have made a major effort to do
this in 1947 -- because by 1949 it was basically already too late.
The Vatican itself pretty much admitted this was a lost cause by
opening formal diplomatic relations with Israel in 1993.

I said absolutely nothing about historical claims -- only that if
there was to be an effective international political drive for
internationalization, then it needed to happen BEFORE the wars started
in 1948, and so before the Israelis precariously held on to west
Jerusalem with much suffering and sacrifice (so that from that point
on the Israelis would have felt that they were dishonoring their
heroic dead if they had conceded anything on Jerusalem).
Furthermore, the Arab state of Transjordan didn't want Jerusalem to be
internationalized any more than the Israelis did. If the world
community wanted international agreements to determine the future
status of British mandatory Palestine, then they shouldn't have
endorsed or tacitly acquiesced in the cynical British "law of the
jungle" strategy, in which the British withdrew without handing over
authority or control to anybody, but instead left the Arabs and Jews
to fight each other for whatever they could grab. After abdicating
their responsibilities over the League of Nations mandate territory in
this shameless way, the member-states of the United Nations could
hardly then have stepped in and piously insisted on dictating terms
such as the internationalization of Jerusalem!

I believe that Ariadne is referring to the indisputable fact that
there was absolutely zero freedom of worship for Jews in east
Jerusalem under Arab rule from 1949-1967, but plenty of freedom of
worship for Arabs in east Jerusalem under Israeli rule from 1967 on.
