Internationalize Jerusalem |
The time has come to once again address the issue of Jerusalem. Despite
the current goodwill amongst Israeli's and Palestinians, the final
status of Jerusalem is far too important to all the peoples of the
world to allow only these two entities to determine. The UN should
immediately convene and debate whether it is in everyones best
interests for this holiest of cities to be nationalized, beholden to no
one nation or people. The members of the Security Council could arrange
security concerns and deal with any nation that refuses to abide by the
UN's decision.

Coming from someone who posts cooking recipes, using dead children from
this conflict, on the net it is rather interesting to note that the
same person states " Most sources on Arafat are highly contradictory,
due to the numerous lies Arafat told about himself and his past over
the course of his too-long life." How someone like that believes they
are able to determine what are lies, what is myth and what is reality
is highly questionable. There is also a slew of 'evidence' that all
show Palestinian heritage for each and every one of the ones which
point away. Let us not forget that this is something that is in the
interest of Israeli's to emphasize, just like Palestinians emphasize
the most Jews in Israel have no recent roots in the place, this silly
game is played by both. On a similar note one can also claim that what
is in the Torah about a god having given some land to some people, is
at best a myth perpeturated throughout the ages, or at worst a lie to
try to seize land from others. NO ONE can prove it one way or the
other. But does that stop people from acting according to those
beliefs as if they are facts? Of course not because they are accepted
as facts against all logic. A prime reason this silly conflict goes on
and on.
[WJ20K]
That is a erroneous point as Muslims (as stated in the Quran) as well as
Jews believe the land was given to the Israelites.
I am not aware that it is stated as such in the Koran. Which passage
are you referring to?
[WJ20K]
What is in dispute is
the lineage of present day settlers of Israel whoMuslims do not believe are
decendents of the Israelites of old or that Ishmael is a decendent of
Arbaham and the Arabs are also entitled to the land as dictated by the
Abrahamic covenent.
Given that religious beleif is not monolithic, you will find all sorts
of interpretations. You above comment follows one interpretation as to
how to 'religiously' resolve the matter which in all reality will never
happen. Recall for example that there are Jews who believe it is
against Judaism for Jews on their own to establish a nation called
Israel. Who knows, maybe their interpretation of Judaism is the
correct one. Will a majority of Israeli-Jews ever believe that and
thus resolve the conflict in favor of non-Jews in the area, even if it
was correct? Of course not, it would be unrealistic. You will NEVER
get 100% agreement neither among Jews nor Muslims. Thus I always
prefer the pragmatic approach and leave religion on the sidelines even
in this religion steeped conflict. You will notice that religion,
while invoked every so often by politicians is not the main issue for
them.

I forgot to add that most Israeli politicians are not such imbeciles as
to question Arafat's heritage because they know their own can also be
questioned in a similar manner if they begin this silly game. Arafat
is accepted as Palestinian by Israel's political establishment just
like Israel accepts thousands of questionable 'Jews' from eastern
Europe. The question is irrelevant. :-)

On what basis do you say that Arafat is a full blooded Egyptian? Are
you trying to insult Egyptians?
Mickey wrote:
Are you being intentionally dense? Arafat was an Egyptian because his
parents were, as were his grandparents and their parents.
Mickey
Give him some basis for the fact that Arafat was Egyptian:
His Palestinian biographer, Dr Said K Aburish, stated he was Egyptian,
as did biographer Alan Hart, and offered the evidence in "Arafat: From
Freedom Fighter to Dictator".
"Mohammed Abdel Rahman was his first name; Abdel Raouf his father's
name; Arafat his grandfather's; Al Qudua is the name of his family; and
Al Husseini is the name of the clan to which the Al Quduas belonged."
Aburish, p 7. "The young Arafat sought to establish his Palestinian
credentials and promote his eventual claim to leadership [and] could
not afford to admit any facts which might reduce his Palestinian
identity...Arafat insistently perpetuated the legend that he had been
born in Jerusalem and was related to the important Husseini clan of
that city." Aburish, p 8. He was "unrelated to the real Husseini
notables of Jerusalem." Aburish, p 9. Arafat was educated in Cairo, and
attended the University of Cairo, where he joined the Muslim
Brotherhood, membership in which was open only to Egyptians.
Arafat's birth certificate registered his birth in Cairo. His father
was a Cairene merchant with business links in Khan Yunis, who traveled
on an American passport. (Arafat travelled to Moscow several times on
his Egyptian passport.) The Qudwa family (Arafat's real name) had
owned property in Cairo for generations, which his father initiated
several actions in the Egyptian courts to regain. Arafat, however,
claimed his father had forged the Cairene birth certificate so he could
attend school for free. After their mother's death, his father
remarried twice. Arafat was raised by his sister, Imam, who said he was
"not like other children in playing or in his feelings... He gathered
the Arab kids of the district, formed them into groups and made them
march and drill. He carried a stick and he used to beat those who did
not obey his commands."
Among his numerous claims, Arafat claimed to have been commissioned in
the Egyptian army; to have fought in Gaza in 1948, to have served in
the Suez campaign IN 1956, the year he earned his BA from the U of
Cairo. He also claimed to have been born in Jerusalem, and, as a boy,
to have played soccer with Jews in the plaza before the Western Wall.
[Get that? In the plaza before the Western Wall when he was a boy?]
When Nasser cracked down on the Brotherhood, Arafat was expelled from
Egypt, along with other lower-ranking members. He then went to Kuwait,
where he either worked in the public works department as an engineer,
and founded his own contracting business; or else he ran a car-theft
ring. While in Kuwait, he co-founded the Fatah, dedicated to the
destruction of Israel, with, among others, Abu Sitta, who now operates
the Palestine Remembered site.
Most sources on Arafat are highly contradictory, due to the numerous
lies Arafat told about himself and his past over the course of his
too-long life.

However, the Palestinians or rather Israeli-Arabs have displayed no good
will. Israeli-Arabs are only using the peace process to further their goal
of destroying Israel.
Don't generalize so much, that almost sounds like those nutters who
think Jews want to control the world. LOL!

I'm not generalizing, just stating what is fact. Yes, both sides have done
wrong but only one side states in their charter and speaches that the
struggle will not be over until Israel is no more. Israelis and Arabs can
talk all they want to but until both sides approach the issues with honesty
then there will never be any peace.

You are correct but just as most Muslims are not terrorists, must terrorists
are Muslims. Unfortunately, the innocent of a group suffer for the actions
of the guilty. A few American soldiers commit crimes and the world delights
in painting all Americans soldiers as criminals when the entirely opposite
is true. While I'm sure the great majority of Palestinians desire only to
live in peace and only want some semblance of a normal life, one has to look
at what their leadership desires, demands and aspires to by words and deeds.
The Palestinian representatives, their terrorist organizations and most (if
not all) of the Arab world want nothing less than the elimination of Israel.
The declaration for the elimination of Israel is in the Hamas and other
Palestinian charters. In short, any so called peace overtures by Arabs or
Palestinians is nothing more than a delying tactic. Do you seriously want
me to believe that if Israel allowed total return of all Palestinians that
shortly thereafter there would not be an enormous upheavel, mass killing of
Jews and the name of Israel changed to Palestine? No, my friend neither the
Palestinians nor the Arab world desires what most term as peace. Yes, I'm
sure most Israelis and Palestinians are tired of all the fuss and would like
to settle down and live normal lives but weither the Palestinian leadership
not the rest of the Arab world who are only using the Palestinians will not
let this happen. I hear constant Arab wailing about how Israel is nothing

acknowledge most of the borders of their countries are nothing more than a
creation of the West.

But there you go again making a generalization by stating "the

You're nitpicking. Such teachings are included in their schoolbooks, their
homes, their cultural activities and their religious activities. I can
accurately state English is a common language in American but if one is
arguementive then they can show that the statement is not 100% accurate as
there are those in this country who do not speak English.
It is not unrealisitic to say that not ALL

Common sense has to be included. It would be foolish for the Israelis to
base their defensive posture on the premise that all Palestinians are not
suicide bombers. If there was someway to determine exactly who was intent
on murder versus who just wanted to go to work then there would be no
problem. However, the fact is there are suicide bombers and the only way to
find those people is to treat all as suicide bombers.

However, the Palestinians or rather Israeli-Arabs have displayed

Don't generalize so much, that almost sounds like those nutters
who
think Jews want to control the world. LOL!

I'm not generalizing, just stating what is fact.
What you believe to be a fact is in fact a generalization. Your
sentence implies that ALL Israeli-Arabs and ALL Palestinians have
displayed no good will. You did not use the words SOME or MANY or A
FEW. Thus you are guilty of generalizing which is plain and simple
wrong.
This is one of the MAIN problems when people discuss matter on these
newsgroups. They always tar EVEYRONE with the same brush, Jewish,
Muslims etc. It is wrong and only true idiots think like that.
Just like those people are wrong who think that ALL Jews are
religious
fanatics. SOME are but not ALL.
[WJ20K]
You are correct but just as most Muslims are not terrorists, must
terrorists
are Muslims. Unfortunately, the innocent of a group suffer for the
actions
of the guilty.
Since you claim to know better why don't you stop doing it
[generalizion] then? Why contribute to something you know is
incorrect? Seems rather quirky to do so.
[WJ20K]
You seem to have an unrealistic view of the world. Not all Iraqis are
out
to kill me but if I were to travel the streets of Iraq alone, I'd have a
very good chance of being killed. Not all Palestinians are out to kill
Jews
but if the Israelis were to remove all check points then there would be a
dramatic increase in Israeli deaths. Remember, the Palestinians teach
their
children within their schools and mosques to hate Jews.bombers
But there you go again making a generalization by stating "the
Palestinians teach ....." It certainly is wrong to imply ALL
Palestinians do that.
You're nitpicking.
You may call it nitpicking if you trully believe what you wrote, namely
the ALL Palestinians do what you imply they do. There will always be
bad apples among the lot but it is wrong to claim all are bad.
[WJ20K]
Such teachings are included in their schoolbooks, their
homes, their cultural activities and their religious activities. I can
accurately state English is a common language in American but if one is
arguementive then they can show that the statement is not 100% accurate as
there are those in this country who do not speak English.
You obviously misunderstand the meaning of the word COMMON, it does NOT
imply 100% as you seem to suggest. Hence your above argument is
incorrect. However to say "Palestinians this...., Palestinians
that...." implies ALL Palestinains which I am certain you know is not
the case.
[WJ20K]
It is not unrealisitic to say that not ALL
Palestinians do that, but it certainly IS unrealistic to claim they ALL
do, it even shows a definite bias or worse to insist that ALL do. Just
as it is wrong for any Palestinians to claim that Jews want no non-Jews
living in the area the believe to be their religious lands thereby
implying that ALL Jews think like that. Hence I will repeat that
generalizations like that only add fuel to the flames of the conflict,
and do no good.
[WJ20K]
Common sense has to be included. It would be foolish for the Israelis to
base their defensive posture on the premise that all Palestinians are not
suicide bombers.
True, just like ALL Jews are not religious fanatics, just SOME are as
SOME Palestinians will be terrorists.
[WJ20K]
If there was someway to determine exactly who was intent
on murder versus who just wanted to go to work then there would be no
problem. However, the fact is there are suicide bombers and the only way to
find those people is to treat all as suicide bombers.
The same argument as some Palestinians use to paint ALL Jews religious
fanatics, you can never know which Israeli-Jew is a religious nut hence
they treat all of them as religious nuts, and Israeli-Jews resent that
and rightly so. The same argument holds in reverse for Palestinians
who have nothing to do with terrorist and rightly point out that there
are plenty of Israeli-Jewish terrorists too.

The problem is that we get trapped by this metaphor "countries are people".
Countries do own land and other property, manage funds, enter into disputes,
and have plans. However except in the case of absolute monarchies or
dictatorships, their actions arise as the result of the combined decisions
of people who have some interests in common, and some interests which are
divergent. So one Palestinian may be a suicide bomber because of religious
fervour, another might arrange the bombing because he knows that by doing so
he will undermine the Palestinian authority, a third may privately be
appalled at the action but feel he has got to support it publicly, a fourth
may privately approve but make noises about being committed to the peace
process and a reduction in violence.
This is distilled into "the Palestinian plan is make peace treaties, then
send suicide bombers at every slight difficulty, then claim it is a huge
concession to withdraw the bombers".

Well said, and that of course applies to Israel too, for example: it
builds lots of settlements on disputed territory (which most of the
world except Israel says is illegal) and then calls it a huge
consessionn(of biblical proportions nonetheless! LOL) to remove a few
settlements while still retaining the vast bulk of them. Politicians
in the Middle East seldom do what is best for the long term, other than
for themselves.
