Invisible city

Chongqing is the fastest-growing urban centre on the planet. Its
population is already bigger than that of Peru or Iraq, with half a
million more arriving every year in search of a better life. And yet so
frequently is this story repeated in China, that outside the country
its name barely registers. Jonathan Watts spends 24 hours in the
megalopolis you've never heard of

At some point this year, our species will prove Darwin wrong. For the
first time since the dawn of civilisation, the human being is about to
become a predominantly urban creature: humans have not evolved to fit
our habitat, we have changed our habitat to suit ourselves.
According to the United Nations, the planet's population is currently
split almost right down the middle: 3.2 billion in the city, 3.2
billion in the countryside. But by the start of 2007, the balance will
have tipped decisively away from the fields and towards the
skyscrapers.

You forget that between approx 1760 and 1830 Britain, followed
rapidy by the the rest of Europe and the USA changed from
being a predominantly rural agricultural economy to become an
urban industrial one. You may have heard of it: It was called
"The industrial Revolution". China is now catching up rapidy
and will soon surpass us all.
I just recently purchased a new Laptop now that the prices
have dropped. Where was it made? I will give you one guess
and it wan't the USA or the UK..

Indeed, we have evolved to such an extent that we can adapt our
environment to suit ourselves. Further evolutionary change is
no longer necessary as indeed we can even afford to sustain our
old and weak. Our only predors are ourselves.
Some living things have hardly changed in millions of years as
they can also survive and thrive almost anywhere without
difficulty. It took us only 200,000 years to colonise and thrive
throughout the planet and reach the degree of sophistication
we now enjoy whic shows how successful evolution can be.
What happens though when our populatio exceeds the planets
capacity to sustain it. Already we have almost swept the North
Sea of fish and need to severely restrict fishing so stocks
can recover.
