Why the heck shoulsd science bother about religious thought?
For the same reason that it studies other forms of acquired insanity.

I'm currently watching a set of videons on atheist nation, filmed at a
conference at the Salk Institute a coiuple of years ago. Some amazing
guests.
http://www.atheistnation.net/video/?video/00504/atheist/session-1-beyond-belief-2006/
They are ten of them, they're long and I'll probably download them and
burn some disks.
One of the best so far was Neil deGrasse Tyson, director the Hayden
Planetarium, asking why 7% of the NAS still believed. He also pointed
out that the Islamic world led science 700/800 years ago - until it
embraced religious fundamentalism.
He said that after 9/11 Bush said that "the God who named the stars"
was better than Islam - but Islamic astronomers named the stars:
Algol, Aldebaran etc.
Science simply models reality and can't compromise to fit religious
beliefs.
Anybody who tries to make science and religion reconcile with each
other, is IMO an idiot because the facts won't change.
Other speakers so far include Dawkins, Harris, Shermer and Ayala (a
lengthy question)

Seen 'em.
Copied 'em.
Burnt them to DVD!
Tyson is at his usual dynamic best, but Sam Harris gave one of the
best off the cuff performances, and Steven Weinberg was utterly
superb.
