DES MOINES
Governor Tom Vilsack released the following statement
this afternoon regarding the situation at the Iowa State
Penitentiary in Fort Madison:
"This afternoon I spoke with Mayor John Wright of Fort
Madison. During the conversation, I committed to him the
state of Iowa’s full resources to manage the investigation
surrounding the escape of two inmates of the Iowa State
Penitentiary.
Understanding that the safety and security of Iowans is
paramount, I have ordered the Department of Corrections
to keep the Iowa State Penitentiary in ‘lock down’ status.
This order will remain in effect until a full investigation can
ensure the public’s safety.
Further, I have directed the Commissioner of Public Safety
to make any and all state resources available immediately
to assist in search and investigatory efforts. I have asked
Gene Meyer, Director of the Department of Criminal Investigation
and Steve Bogle, Assistant Director for Field Operations,
to assist local law enforcement and oversee the state
investigation in Lee County with the goal of apprehending
these individuals as soon as possible.
I will continue to closely monitor this situation."
