The loss of life in Iran is unacceptable in this age and their leaders, instead
of touring the site with grand plans for rebuilding it,, should be charged with
manslaughter at least. Frisco has been hit with quakes up to 7.1 without
anywhere near this amount of casualties.
We often hear someone pointing out that this country was founded on the
Christian religion. It was not. It was founded on pragmatism. Most western
nations gave up on religion as a guiding force some time ago and chose
observable evidence and experience as a better formula to go by. The separation
of state from religion, started in France, has forced religion on to the back
burner of most western societies. For instance, a judge can and does overrule a
religion if that religion opposes blood transfusions when a minor is involved.
It is no accident that we are far better off than the Iranians, not only
as far as personal freedom goes, but also economically.
While we design buildings to meet specific standards, they depend on
Allah's or god's will. Even in the west, South America, while as rich a
continent as this one, has been home to much poverty and cruelty. Torture is
common. Again, Catholicism plays a large part in their lives and while poverty
is endemic, the church and the leaders remain rich.
We are a Secular Society, despite the claims of our religious leaders
and we are so much better off because we are. Let's make sure we keep it that
way. 20,000 deaths are unacceptable.
Cheers
