Iran daily holds contest for Holocaust cartoons
Tue Feb 7, 1:24 PM ET
Iran's best-selling newspaper has launched a competition to find the
best cartoon about the Holocaust in retaliation for the publication in
many European countries of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad.
The Brussels-based Conference of European Rabbis (CER) denounced the
idea and urged the Muslim world to do likewise.
The Anti-Defamation League, which fights anti-Semitism, described the
competition as "deliberately inflammatory."
The Iranian daily Hamshahri said the contest was designed to test the
boundaries of free speech -- the reason given by many European
newspapers for publishing the cartoons of the Prophet.
"Does Western free speech allow working on issues like America and
Israel's crimes or an incident like the Holocaust or is this freedom of
speech only good for insulting the holy values of divine religions?" the
paper asked.
Davoud Kazemi, who is in charge of the contest, told Reuters that each
of the 12 winners would have their cartoons published and receive two
gold coins (worth about $140 each) as a prize.
In Paris, CER President Joseph Sitruk, who is also Chief Rabbi of
France, said: "The Iranian regime has plummeted to new depths if it
regards the deaths of six million Jews as a matter for humor or to score
cheap political points.
"Sadly, we are not surprised by this action," he said, recalling Iranian
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's calls last year for Israel to be "wiped
off the map" and his dismissal of the Holocaust as a myth.
In a statement issued by the CER, which represents chief rabbis from
over 40 European countries, Sitruk said the Iranian government menaced
Jews and the whole international community.
Sitruk noted that European religious leaders had condemned the
publication of images likely to offend Muslim feelings.
"This is a test for the Muslim world to react immediately to condemn
their own co-religionists in Iran for such obscene behavior as we
condemned those who sought to insult them," he said.
Iranian protesters hurled petrol bombs and stones at the Danish Embassy
in Tehran for a second successive day on Tuesday and Tehran announced it
had cut all trade ties with Denmark.
A Danish newspaper published the cartoons in September, and newspapers
in Norway and a dozen other countries reprinted them last month, citing
the need to defend freedom of speech.
Arieh O'Sullivan, spokesman for the Anti-Defamation League's Israel
office, said it was committed to free speech and a free press but that
did not mean a license to foster hatred.
"What bothers us this incident has been used by the Arab world basically
as an excuse to stick it to the Jews," he said.
"Iran is doing a dare to see how free the press is in Europe. This is
deliberately inflammatory," O'Sullivan said, accusing newspapers in the
Arab and Muslim world of frequently running cartoons of Jews that
recalled Nazi propaganda.
In Belgium, a radical Muslim group based in Antwerp began publishing
cartoons on its Web site which it also said were intended to challenge
European taboos and highlight inconsistency in the European approach to
freedom of speech.
They included a cartoon of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in bed with Anne
Frank, a Jewish girl whose wartime diary written in hiding in Amsterdam
is a worldwide best-seller, and another that questioned whether 6
million Jews died in the Holocaust.
"If it is the time to break taboos and cross all the red lines, we
certainly do not want to stay behind," the Arab European League said on
its Web site (www.arabeuropean.org).
Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt accused the group of fuelling
riots in Antwerp in November, 2002. The group's leader, Dyab Abou
Jahjah, was briefly arrested at the time. He ran unsuccessfully for
parliament in 2003.

That sounds ok. So what? They can take it without demanding the death of the
editors unlike the Islamists.

My own opinion is that Islam is at this time firmly entrenched
somewhere in the 12th century. Having no recognized central authority
- and Caliphs and Ayatollahs running the gambit from moderates to
wacked-out radicals - it's no wonder we're seeing this sort of
response. Interesting that one Islamic newspaper has decided that the
answer to the Muhammed cartoons is to publish their own cartoons of the
Holocaust. Intolerance is one thing, bad taste another.

I don't understand what the Jews had to do with publishing those

show the world just what a bigoted, racist, idiotic gang is running that

The Iranians, apparently, are printing the Holocaust cartoons to point

Certainly the ones doing the rioting and their leaders don't represent
all Muslims no more than those cartoonists represent all those in the
West. If a Muslim paper were to print a satirical picture of Jesus, the
fundies in the West would be upset, but I doubt if they would riot, nor
would their leaders incite them to riot.

The Holocaust was the murder of six million human beings. That it
happened is established fact. To me there is a big difference between
satirizing that and satirizing one more religious leader. As I said,
the Iranians have a right to publish those cartoons, but I reserve the
right to my opinion of it.
Lastly, I differentiate between the Muslim leaders and extremists
stirring things up and the Muslim in the street who probably doesn't
care one way or the other.

The Holocaust is an historical fact, but I see no reason it should be
protected from historical review more than any other historical event.

I think that we agree that there is no problem with a legitimate review
of the Holocaust as history. . However, satirizing the cruel deaths six
million innocent people, it doesn't matter if they were Jewish, Muslim,
Christian, Black, white, or Asian, crosses a line and is inappropriate.
If they do publish them, they deserve the criticism that they get.

It is also something that happened 60 years ago, while Muslims are
dying as we speak in Iraq, Afghanistan and the West Bank.

I don't condone everything that the West is doing in those places, but
it should be remembered that it's also Muslim killing Muslim.

I am against bigotry and racism is ignorant stupidity. However, in a
free society all viewpoints should be allowed as free speech as long as
they don't violate others rights (eg slander).
I did see those cartoons and I didn't see them as implying that all
Muslims were terrorists as much as terrorists hiding behind their
religion to justify their actions.

Lastly, I differentiate between the Muslim leaders and extremists
stirring things up and the Muslim in the street who probably doesn't
care one way or the other.

The Holocaust is an historical fact, but I see no reason it should be
protected from historical review more than any other historical event.

It shouldn't. If there were valid factual reason for "review" then go
ahead and review. That the people who deny it (such as the Iranian
government) go against all of the evidence says there is something
else other than evidence involved. That the deniers have a strong
connection to neo-Nazi groups is suggestive at the least.

It is also something that happened 60 years ago, while Muslims are
dying as we speak in Iraq, Afghanistan and the West Bank.

Moslems are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan because, for the most part,
other Moslems are killing them. If Moslems really want to show they
are a people of peace they can start by protesting the Moslem led
genocide in Darfur.

Some people label it that way, but that is foolish. You might want to
take a look at Israeli discussions of Israel, they have plenty of open
criticism of the government. I am sorry, but when people talk of the
"genocide" of the Palestinians, that is not the "mildest" criticism,
that is suspect anti-Semitism and certainly it is minimizing the
Holocaust. Here is a quick test: several years ago during the Civil
War in Lebanon there was a massacre of civilians at some camps. Name
as many of the people involved as you can remember without looking it
up. Then tell me the name of the person who ordered and carried out
the killings. Then tell me there is no anti-Semitism involved.

but portraying Muslims as terrorists is considered a

Even hypocritical speech is allowed. That is the point of free speech,
even speech you don't like is allowed.

I think it's pretty obvious a lot of Holocaust denial is motivated by
anti-Semitism.

It is also something that happened 60 years ago, while Muslims are

Moslems are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan because, for the most part,
other Moslems are killing them.

I'd like to see your evidence for this claim, particularly with regards
to Iraq.

If Moslems really want to show they
are a people of peace they can start by protesting the Moslem led
genocide in Darfur.

Your evidence that Muslims are not protesting is what? Or can you just
make an outrageous claim like this and say that you can't prove a
negative? Even Qaddafi has tried to organize several Muslim and
non-Muslim African nations to do something about the genocide. I'm sure
if I bothered to do a little more research, I could find others. I see
the West doing ***** all as well.
The Darfur genocide is another area where the media has misconstrued
the facts in an attempt to portray this as an "Arab vs Black" racist
campaign, when in reality both sides in the conflict are Black, they
are all predominantly Muslim (in Darfur, but not Southern Sudan) and
there have been incidences of violence against the "Arab" side as well.
The picture is not as simple as portrayed, just as in the Balkans.

I think
Muslims have every right to feel as beleaguered by anti-Muslim bigotry
as the Jews do about anti-Semitism, and there shouldn't be a double
standard where even the mildest criticism of Israel gets labeled as
"anti-Semitic"

Some people label it that way, but that is foolish. You might want to
take a look at Israeli discussions of Israel, they have plenty of open
criticism of the government.

It is interesting that there is more open criticism of Israeli policies
in Israel than in the US, but then the accusation of anti-Semitism has
little weight against Jews.

I am sorry, but when people talk of the
"genocide" of the Palestinians, that is not the "mildest" criticism,
that is suspect anti-Semitism and certainly it is minimizing the
Holocaust.

Whether or not you consider it a "genocide" depends on which side of
the gun you're on. That this "minimizes" the Holocaust and is
anti-Semitic is absurd. There are some Israelis who claim they are
fighting an existential battle for "Isreal's right to exist" against
hordes of Arabs hell-bent on wiping isreal off the map. Somehow, I
don't think a country with one of the most powerful armies in the world
and nuclear weapons is going to wiped out by a handful of suicide
bombers and some kids throwing rocks.

Look, if you have a point to make, make it. I doubt most people in the
US are familiar with the Sabra and Shatila massacre, and I don't think
awareness of this massacre somehow constitutes anti-Semitism. Your
insinuation is patently absurd, and is a fairly good exmaple of my
point of finding anti-Semitism in everything. As for who ordered the
massacre, without looking it up I knew it was a commander of the
Christian Phalange, who later became the leader of Lebanon. I also
forgot the name of everyone in the Israeli high command and government
who were alleged to have known about the massacre while it was
happening but did nothing to stop it, other than Ariel Sharon, of
course.

I don't understand what the Jews had to do with publishing those

show the world just what a bigoted, racist, idiotic gang is running that
country now.

I don't doubt that the folks running Iran are bigoted, racist, idiotic
and anti-Semitic, I just wonder why people can't see that the folks who
published those cartoons of Muhammad are the same.

Are they? They held the cartoon contest in search of an answer to a
question they had. The avenue might not have been the best, but it was
the only way they could think of at the time. Hindsight is always
"20-20."
Note that for months any reaction was measured and civilized. It wasn't
until the imam and his team from Denmark deliberately caused a
conflagration and included things which were not published by the
newspaper it resurfaced.

The Iranians, apparently, are printing the Holocaust cartoons to point
out the hypocrisy--and it is hypocrisy--of Europeans who say that it is
illegal and racist to deny the Holocaust, but that offensive, racist
cartoons of Muslims are fair game.

Hypocrisy abounds in the world. I can see a rationale for said
Holocaust law-which *only* applies to the jurisdictions of the
individual countries. Whether those laws are still needed is another
topic. You'd have a point if those countries were seeking to apply their
laws in; Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, etc.. They are not.
Such is a magnitude of difference between that and Superstitious Muslim
Lunatics rioting, killing, and drooling moronic threats concerning their
putrid and malevolent superstition.
Further, the mideastern countries in such an orchestrated uproar
routinely publish cartoons lampooning; the US, UK, Europe, and what
seems to be a favourite target-the Jews. People may view those cartoons
as 'offensive, 'racist, and 'other label(s).' Such is their perogative.
[shrug]
I see no sign of those muslim countries 'lamenting' over much less
'ceasing and desisting' their characterisations of others. I see no
sign of other countries insisting those muslim countries follow their
desires on the matter. Nor do I see those other countries raging,
rampaging, destroying, and the rest of the muslim tantrums.
The tenets of the muslim superstition do not apply outside their home
countries. Period. End of story. Tough ***** for them. Allah Akabar.

shove a wooden cross up their arses and rotate

be 'blessed' with a cornucopia of splinters.

That sounds ok. So what? They can take it without demanding the death of the
editors unlike the Islamists.

I don't understand what the Jews had to do with publishing those
cartoons. If the Iranians want to publish such tripe, let them. It will
show the world just what a bigoted, racist, idiotic gang is running that
country now.

I don't doubt that the folks running Iran are bigoted, racist, idiotic
and anti-Semitic, I just wonder why people can't see that the folks who
published those cartoons of Muhammad are the same.

I don't, but even if I did I don't see them running a country.

The Iranians, apparently, are printing the Holocaust cartoons to point
out the hypocrisy--and it is hypocrisy--of Europeans who say that it is
illegal and racist to deny the Holocaust, but that offensive, racist
cartoons of Muslims are fair game.

Sorry, but the hypocrisy comes on the Iranian/Syrian/Saudi/etc. side
since they have been printing and promoting (government here, don't
pretend they have a free press) virulently anti-Semitic material for
decades. They are hypocrites for suddenly calling for respect for
other religions. If the Iranians want respect for other religions they
can start by ending their nasty persecution of Ba'hais.

No argument here that the Iranian government is hypocritical and

I guess that I judge people who have national power differently than I
judge newspapers editors.

I am sorry, but I don't see the double standard you claim. I see a
vastly different one, I see you and the Iranians and the Syrians
complaining about behavior far milder than the actions of Iran and
Syria.

Iran daily holds contest for Holocaust cartoons

Tue Feb 7, 1:24 PM ET

Iran's best-selling newspaper has launched a competition
to
find
the
best cartoon about the Holocaust in retaliation for the
publication
in
many European countries of caricatures of the Prophet
Mohammad.

That sounds ok. So what? They can take it without demanding
the
death
of
the
editors unlike the Islamists.

Tam

I don't understand what the Jews had to do with publishing
those
cartoons. If the Iranians want to publish such tripe, let
them.
It
will
show the world just what a bigoted, racist, idiotic gang is
running
that
country now.

Evidentally, they see the Jews as being behind everything.

The Jews and the US.

Who's pulling whos strings?

Good question, but the crazies think that each one is pulling the
others.

Insanity would have that tendency.

Paranoia rules.

Bush is that way and copiously drools

He drools and rules in the company of fellow fools.

one can't 'rule' when they're a tool.

But those who rule the tools are bigger fools
who in turn are tools of yet even bigger fools

and all the cretinist synchophantic droolers are welcome to dwell
in hell

let hell
be their hotel
