In the leader of Iran we have a madman who apparently believes that it is
his duty to bring about a nuclear holocaust, because this will bring about
the return of the 'Hidden Imam'. This mythical figure, he and many Moslems
believe, will purge the world of non-believers and cause the final, total
victory of Islam. Marking the non-believers, we can assume, is to facilitate
the Imam's work
There are politicians in the USA who are aware of the danger, are urging a
pre-emptive military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.
Faced with the possibility of extinction of life on earth if Iranians do not
come to their senses and remove Ahmadinejad to the asylum where he belongs,
it is difficult to see any other solution.

Unfortunately, in the leader of America we have an imbecile who
apparently believes that he is acting in god's will and that
Armageddon is part of that.

Don't be so easily fooled and intimidated. The world is not on
the brink of nuclear annihilation because of Iran, any more than
the U.S. faced "imminent" danger from Iraqi WMDs a few years
ago.
You should, by now, know better than to to follow Bush's lying
lead.

horrible mistake back in the 80s of deciding that countries it liked

I cannot believe you mean that.

I am talking about one specific threat from Iranian Islamic extremists.
If, on the other
hand, you want everyone to look at the Moslems and ignore the far more
immediate threat Christian fundies pose to a free America, then just

Bush and the xtian fundies present all manner of threats to the civilised

The emergence of an insane Islamic fundamentalism in a country that

It might not be very clean and surgical, but yes, I think it would be
successful. No one is proposing an invasion or occupation of Iran, just
the destruction of its nuclear facilities - in the same way that Israel
did to Iraq.
We are facng an evil so great as to dwarf all the religious atrocities of

In the leader of Iran we have a madman who apparently believes that it
is
his duty to bring about a nuclear holocaust, because this will bring
about
the return of the 'Hidden Imam'. This mythical figure, he and many
Moslems
believe, will purge the world of non-believers and cause the final,
total
victory of Islam. Marking the non-believers, we can assume, is to
facilitate
the Imam's work
There are politicians in the USA who are aware of the danger, are
urging
a
pre-emptive military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.
Faced with the possibility of extinction of life on earth if Iranians
do
not
come to their senses and remove Ahmadinejad to the asylum where he
belongs,
it is difficult to see any other solution.
Jim Hawkins
Well, before you start massacreeing people in order to rid the world
of evil, you might want to check on that story. It appears to have
been a hoax.
Dead
According to whom ?
Various news sources, including Canada.com, the organization that
first reported the story.
Have Iranian authorities categorically denied it ?
Yes.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=aD9nbnnIbZSQ&refer=top_world_news
And if they have, will anyone believe them ?
By themselves, no. But Iran isn't exacly a closed country. If people
were being forced to wear badges, it would be noticeable.
Religious fundamentalists are well known to lie through
their teeth in support of their barmy beliefs.
Indeed. In this case, the story seems to have come from a different
batch of religious fundamentalists, though.
The stakes are too high to risk the story being false.
Hmm? What stakes? More to the point, WHOSE stakes?
I'm talking about the 12th Imam story, not the badges trifle.
So the stakes are the continued existence of you and me and
everyone else on earth
Oh, spare me. If they are 12th century, they hardly represent any
sort of viable military threat.
I cannot believe you mean that.
You can't have it both ways. Either they're hopelessly backwards and
futile, and thus not a serious threat, or they are. If you believe
both things at once, you've probably swallowed a large dose of
propaganda.
If you are talking about the threat all kinds of religious fanaticism
poses to all free and secular societies, say so.
I am talking about one specific threat from Iranian Islamic extremists.
To the exclusion of more immediate and local threats. Yup. You've
been getting into the kool-aid.
Look, this regime needs a bogeyman to keep you scared and docile. The
"Islamic extremists" -- a collection of small and widely scattered
groups who spend as much time fighting one another as they do trying
to overthrow secular governments in Pakistan, Egypt and Algeria --
simply put, are not a serious nor a credible threat to America.
America faced the Axis in World War II -- a MUCH more serious and
credible threat -- and managed to do so without Patriot Acts or
demands that the government be allowed to spy on the people.
America also survived a civil war, and while the constitution was
battered, it did survive that, and that was far worse than anything
America faces today.
If, on the other
hand, you want everyone to look at the Moslems and ignore the far more
immediate threat Christian fundies pose to a free America, then just
admit it.
Bush and the xtian fundies present all manner of threats to the civilised
world - threats which I certainly do not want to see ignored, but none of
them is liable to cause the extinction of life on earth in the next few
years.
You DO understand that 80% of the world's nuclear arsenal is in
Putsch's hands, right?
Put it this way: You're Iran, and you have five nuclear bombs. You're
going to take on America, which has 8,000 nuclear bombs.
You look at Putsch crosseyed, and he turns your entire country into a
sea of black radioactive glass.
So when do you attack?
Oh. You don't....
If you are really worried about terrorists sneaking bombs into
American ports -- a much more legitimate concern -- then ask yourself
why you approve of nuclear saber-rattling against a country that is
years from nuclear weaponry, and may not even be trying for same,
while completely ignoring the actions of an ally that has sold and
even given away nuclear technology to countrys that don't like
America, such as North Korea and Libya (now our good buddies!), and
which may well fall, nuclear arsenal and all into the hands of the
very terrorists you profess to fear so much.
The Iranians must be given an ultimatum - stop processing
or have your nuclear facilities destroyed.
Ah. Well, that's why you are so anxious to have the story be true.
You want another war for America to lose.
On the contrary, I very much hope the story is not true.
But I want to stop Islamic extremists having any chance of bringing
about the end of the world.
I'm no lover of the neo-colonialist USA and its Religious Right
ideology,
but I believe Bush would stop at a nuclear holocaust whereas the
Iranian nutter might not.
I note that it's Putsch, and not the nutter, who's talking about using
nuclear weapons at this time. I note that in the face of public and
world-wide outcry, Putsch has backed away from that, but the damage is
done; the rest of the world is moving toward making an American
assault on Iran more difficult.
Look, non-proliferation is a wonderful idea, but the US made the
horrible mistake back in the 80s of deciding that countries it liked
could join the nuclear club (such as Israel, France, Pakistan and now
India) while countries it didn't risked attack for trying. That cost
the US the moral authority it needed if it was to act as enforcer of
the non-proliferation treaty.
The emergence of an insane Islamic fundamentalism in a country that
has vowed to pursue nuclear technology has changed everything.
Back in the 80s that had not happened.
Oh, please. Stop drinking the koolaid, child. Next you're going to
be telling us that Iran "is worse than Hitler" and eat babies, or some
such.
This is not just another inter-national disagreement.
Actually, yes, it is. Two different countries, disagreeing. That
pretty well defines it.
It is about the preservation of life on earth.
And life will be preserved by having the only country to actually have
used nukes on civilian populations threaten to use more nukes on a
different population?
No, I think conventional guided bunker busters have now been developed
to the point where they would suffice.
Maybe, but given the fiasco of Iraq, a much smaller and less developed
countrie, do you really think the US could make a clean, surgical
strike that is effective?
It might not be very clean and surgical, but yes, I think it would be
successful. No one is proposing an invasion or occupation of Iran, just
the destruction of its nuclear facilities - in the same way that Israel
did to Iraq.
We are facng an evil so great as to dwarf all the religious atrocities of
past ages. I profoundly hope that some other way of dealing with it will
emerge, but I'm not holding my breath.

The National Post was founded by Conrad Black and has been owned by
CanWest since 2003,* is not a repository of expertise about Iran. It
is typical of black psychological operations campaigns that they begin
with a plant in an out of the way* newspaper that is then picked up by
the mainstream press. Once the Jerusalem Post picks it up, then
reporters can source it there, even though the Post has done no
original reporting and has just depended on the National Post article,
which is extremely vague in its own sourcing (to "human rights
groups").
The stakes are too high to risk the story being false.
Right, just like those non existent WMDs in Iraq.

Yes! just like those WMDs in Iraq. The fact that the intelligence was
