A year after the Iraq insurgency began in 2003, sceptics asked: "Is
this the new Vietnam?" At the time, many of us who pontificate about
these things answered no. Simplistic historical comparisons are almost
always mistaken. It seemed premature to pass any melodramatic judgment
about Iraq.
