It is apparent to me that the war in Iraq is the second Viet Nam. Christian
fundamentalism was not as vociferous during that unpopular war of America.
Now the fundamentalists are out of their holes and have power in the White
House supporting this new wave of butchering. Over 1200 young men and women
have given their lives just because Jesus told President Bush to attack
Iraq. I wonder if Bush ever thinks about our young soldiers dieing in a
country thousands of miles from home while he is feasting on a steak dinner.
On one of the news programs they were showing how men who have families,
jobs and businesses who were in the reserve are called back to serve in
Iraq. Mothers with young children must find jobs to sustain themselves, how
obscene can you get?

One more thing Doctor, I beleive the Christian Fundalmentalists (including
Bush) do not believe in having one parent household. How many Americans now
have single parent households because of this war??? And in Iraq??? Well,
the christian fundalmentalists do not care about that problem in
Iraq...they're not christian!!!

The big difference (to me) between Iraq and Vietnam is that there is no
draft. As long as there is no draft, the American public may grumble about
this war but they will accept it.

A once-great empire, Rome fell into catastrophic cultural and economic
decline. Morris Berman on chilling parallels with modern America
Saturday October 6, 2001
The Guardian
When I wrote my recent book, The Twilight of American Culture, my focus
was on what might be called "inner" barbarism, the structural factors
endemic to American society that were, I believed, bringing about its
disintegration.
The contemporary American situation could be compared to that of Rome
in the Late Empire period, and the factors involved in the process of
decline in each case are pretty much the same: a steadily widening gap
between rich and poor; declining marginal returns with regard to
investment in organisational solutions to socioeconomic problems (in
the US, dwindling funds for social security and medicare); rapidly
dropping levels of literacy, critical understanding, and general
intellectual awareness; and what might be called "spiritual death":
apathy, cynicism, political corruption, loss of public spirit, and the
repackaging of cultural content (eg "democracy") as slogans and
formulas.

Until the "need" for a draft becomes "apparent". Then they'll accept
the draft too.
(The "need" for the draft will be as "apparent" as Saddam's WMD have
been. I'm still surprised that the administration didn't plant any.)

You were simply wrong about them planting the WMD.
You'll be wrong about a draft too.
The *only* people talking seriously about a military draft are

Count my wife's niece among them. Her husband's in Afghanistan. She
works 3 14 hour shifts every weekend to make up for his lost salary
and the kids, 5 and 2, are going to grow up not knowing Daddy for a
few years.
I'm sure Shrub must have given that at least 1 nanosecond's worry.

Nope, absolutely no evidence of that. No jungle, no lack of desire to win
