Iraq question |
Who created the country of Iraq? Was it us or the British?
Do Arabs think of them selves as Egyptians, Iraqi's, Saudi's or do
they think or themselves as Muslims living in the pre 1920's Arabia?
Thanks
Eris.

As to number 1, the British created Iraq after World War I and the fall of
the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire. Britain took the southern Kurdish part of
Turkey and attached it to "Mesopotamia." Earlier, the Brits took Kuwait,
properly a province of Iraq, for their own purposes.
Saddam had legitimate territorial reasons for invading Kuwait in 1990 - not
the least of which is that our ambassador to Iraq, April Glasspie, gave him
the green light.
The British are largely responsible for the mess in the Middle East.

Answer 1: Britain.
Answer 2: I don't know a whole lot of Arabs. Of the 2 I did have some
conversations with, one considered himself Egyptian, the other said he
was Syrian.

Modern day Iraq was created by the British [1917-1932] (previously it
was part of the Ottoman Empire [1534-1917]).
From what I've seen most Arabs see them themselves as from a
particular country what binds them as Arabs is they speak the same
language. I will note that not all Arabs are Muslim, many are
Christian, and not all Iraqis are Arabs.
Iraq's population breakdown seems to include ethnically (i.e., they
speak different languages)
Arabs
Kurds
Turkmen
(Chaldeans and Assyrians may be a separate ethnic group though under
Hussein they were classified as Arabs, some still speak their own
language, Assyrian/Aramaic. There are also Armenians, Persians, and
others.)
and religiously
Shi'ite Muslim 60-65%
Sunni Muslin 32-37%
Christians make up about 3% of the population with groups being
Assyrian Church of the East (this traces it roots back to a split with the
Orthodox/Catholic churches of the west. It is sometimes
called Nestorian)
Chaldeans (similar to the Assyrian except it reconciled with the Roman
Catholic church though its rites are different)
Armenian Church, Syrian Orthodox, ...
not many if any protestants
and some small religions
Yazidis (odd religion, no one seems to agree on exactly what they
believe, possibly 100,000)
Mandaeans (follow John the Baptist, possibly 40,000 in Iraq)
'Ali-Ilahis
Jews
