One woman is a widely respected former top government official known as
the "Iron Lady" and "the conscience of Hong Kong". The other is an ex-
security chief who made herself so unpopular that her effigy was
dragged through the streets of the former colony in 2003, but who
appears to have converted to democracy after a year at Princeton.
Both Anson Chan and Regina Ip are at the vanguard of vigorous debate
over universal suffrage in Hong Kong, flying in the face of Beijing's
insistence the territory should remain what it always terms "an
economic city".
