Ready For A Woman President?
Feb. 5, 2006
(CBS) As has been the case for a number of years, nearly all Americans say
they would vote for a woman for president from their own political party if
she were qualified, a CBS News/New York Times poll has found. And while a
significantly smaller majority thinks America is actually ready to elect a
woman president, that number is still the highest ever found by a CBS News
poll.
Ninety-two percent of adults now say they would vote for a woman for
president from their political party if she were qualified for the job. This
support has increased steadily over the past 50 years.
In a Gallup poll conducted in 1955, 52 percent said they would support a
woman for president. That number rose to 73 percent in 1975 and to 82
percent in 1987.

I wouldn't be so hard on Bush.
After all like a chipmanzee he can ride a bicycle whenever he's not flying
headfirst over the handlbars. And like chimpanzees, he has a very primative,
rudamentary grasp of language.
Don't know if he can use tools though. The chimp might have a leg up on him

Having seen the movie I would think a better statement would be: and 20 years
ago we had a guy that worked for a chimp.
Hell, let's put a female chimp on the ballot and vote her in, that way we get
the best of both worlds, someone much smarter than Bush and who probably
knows better on how to clean up this mess *and* a female.

president.

Being "qualified" no longer has anything to do with it.

But those *are* the qualifications.

Fred most certainly has a religion. It is Bushism - and his strict
adherance to it is becoming more and more comical.
Fred is definitely not an atheist. But he does at least have one up on the
regular theists in that his gods are visible. Too bad they're not so
bright.

Sure. Why not as long as she is qualified?

I understand what you mean. It is a shame that our elections have become
auctions and the one who can raise the most money and buy the right
connections is most often the winner qualified, or as your example
points out, not.
Still, I reserve the right to vote for the candidate that I think is
best, or at least not as bad as the alternative. Our 'democracy' has
reached a shameful state and until we can get money out of politics, it
will stay that way.

Interesting stats, polls, and article from CBS.
What I'm wondering is this: would having a woman as president of the
United States elicit that much of a change from the politics which are
currently recognized as "the norm"? A very large part of me's saying
no. Here's why I happen to think that: the gender of the person in the
whitehouse will always be subservient to the demands of the country. No
matter if we have a competent male or a competent female in office, all
of the same socio-economic policies and foreign relations issues have
to be considered just as they've always been.
I also find it interesting that the stats seemed to go up in nearly
ten-percent-per-decade increments: the 1950s saw 50-something percent
support for a capable female in office; the 1970s saw 70-something
percent, etc etc. Perhaps those stats reflect on the steadily-rising
liberalism that's come to be associated with the younger generations?

(CBS) As has been the case for a number of years, nearly all Americans say
they would vote for a woman for president from their own political party
if she were qualified, a CBS News/New York Times poll has found. And while
a significantly smaller majority thinks America is actually ready to elect
a woman president, that number is still the highest ever found by a CBS
News poll.

Ninety-two percent of adults now say they would vote for a woman for
president from their political party if she were qualified for the job.
This support has increased steadily over the past 50 years.

In a Gallup poll conducted in 1955, 52 percent said they would support a
woman for president. That number rose to 73 percent in 1975 and to 82
percent in 1987.

Would You Vote For As Woman For President If She Were Qualified?

YES

NO

Significant majorities of all demographic groups say they would vote for a
qualified woman from their own party for president.

Today, 55 percent of those polled think America is ready for a woman
president. This is up 7 percentage points from December 1999, and the
highest number since CBS News started asking the question in 1996. Still,
38 percent say the country is not ready for a woman to lead the country.

Is America Ready For A Woman President?

Now:

NO
38 percent

November, 1996:
YES
40 percent

NO

Men are actually more likely than women to say the country is ready for a
woman to be president. Sixty percent of men say so, compared to 51 percent
of women. In 1999, both groups were divided on the issue.

Younger Americans are also more likely to think America is ready for a
woman commander-in-chief. Seniors are actually split on the question: 46
percent do not think the country is ready, while 44 percent say it is.

When it comes to politics, 61 percent of Democrats think the country is
ready for a woman president, compared to 48 percent of Republicans.
Liberals are also more likely than conservatives and moderates to believe
America is ready for a woman to be president.

This poll was conducted among a nationwide random sample of 1,229 adults,
interviewed by telephone January 20-25, 2006. The error due to sampling
for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three
percentage points.

Sure...why not? Why the hell are we restricting our pool of candidates
to slightly less than half of the eligible US population. Actually,
much less...'cos as we know, only white, male christians, can be
President. What's that...25-30 percent... tops?
Actually, I kinda hope it IS Rice vs Clinton in 2008 so we can get
this whole woman Pres thing out of our system.

What's all the fuzz about female heads of state anyway? We're living under
one now (though cynics have asked whether Angela Merkel really looks like
she's a genuine female... *eg* ), and I can tell you, it doesn't feel much
different compared to the days of Schröder's chancellorship over here. ;)
