(Bleep) Save the Queen - Miramax Edits Out References to God in
Airline Version of "The Queen"
The Birmingham News ^ | 1/23/07 | Stan Diel

In the highly-acclaimed movie "The Queen," theater patrons see Queen
Elizabeth, played by actress Helen Mirren, express her faith in God
after the death of Princess Diana. But in the version of the movie
shown as in-flight entertainment on some airlines, only lip readers
get the message.
Every reference to God in the movie is censored - replaced by a beep.
At least two airlines, Delta and New Zealand Air, have shown
passengers the censored version of the film, prompting complaints.
Eric Johnston, an attorney with the nonprofit Southeastern Law
Institute in Birmingham, compared the censoring of God in the in-
flight movie to businesses' not using the word "Christmas" during the
holidays. Airlines, like some retail businesses, have a diverse body
of customers and don't want to offend anyone, he said.
"But I don't agree with that at all," he said. "If the movie industry
can use the word `God,' then certainly the airlines can use it."
A spokeswoman for Atlanta-based Delta said the airline had no choice
because Miramax Films, distributor of "The Queen" shipped to airlines
only the censored version of the movie.
"That was the only version available to us, and so that's what we
showed," said spokeswoman Katie Connell.
New Zealand Air, which showed the same version of the film on its
jets, apologized earlier this month after passengers complained, and
said it would replace the movie with a version in which "God" isn't
censored.
A passenger complained to New Zealand Air officials after a London
flight on which the censored version of "The Queen" was followed by a
showing of the movie "The Departed," in which swearing was not
censored.
New Zealand Air spokeswoman Pam Wong told The New Zealand Herald that
the distributor had shipped them the wrong version of "The Queen."
Efforts to reach Miramax were unsuccessful.
Jeremy Butler, a professor in the Department of Telecommunication &
Film at the University of Alabama, said airlines commonly receive
versions of movies that are significantly different from the versions
shown in theaters.
If an airline showed an uncensored version of the horror film "Saw,"
for example, "people would be losing their lunch," he said.
But the censorship typically involves raw language, not religious
references.
"It surprises me that they would edit ... (God) out," he said.
"The Queen," which premiered late last summer and is still in
theaters, is a portrait of the royal family during the days after
Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris. The movie has been
warmly received by critics, and Mirren has drawn raves for her
portrayal of the queen.
Mirren last week won the Golden Globe award for best actress for the
performance, making her a front-runner for an Academy Award.
"The Queen" also won a Golden Globe for best screenplay.

When I worked in the editing department in motion pictures, after shipping
the completed film to the distributor, we routinely started work on two
other versions of the film: the international version (or M&E: music and
effects), stripped of dialog so that looping in the desired language could
be layed in. The second version was called the TV version where objectional
language and sexually explicit shots were replaced. One day, to my suprise,
an assistent editor told me that TV version was a misnomer. Broadcasters
prepared their own versions of the movies. What we were doing was actually
intended for the airlines.

Airlines routinely excise crash scenes (especially airplane crashes)
from even PG films as it is, as a general rule--
Censorship rules are somewhat different when showing films to an
involuntary captive audience at 40,000 ft., as opposed to a willing
audience that buys its own ticket...Insert "The movie was so bad I
walked out!" joke here.

Airlines routinely perform a hack job on original films.
It's like watching a movie on a broadcast channel (or even most cable
channels) - you'll get some carved-up, pan-and-scan atrocity.

Seriously, I had a show on a college radio station in the 1970s and
the station manager said the word 'damn' was OK and the word 'god' was
OK but '*****' was not permitted.

HALLMARKS OF A FOOL—I
Proverbs
17:16 Why should a fool have a price in his hand to buy wisdom,
when he has no mind?
17:24 A man of understanding sets his face toward wisdom,
but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
17:10 A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding
than a hundred blows into a fool.
27:22 Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle
along with crushed grain,
yet his folly will not depart from him.
15:14 The mind of him who has understanding seeks knowledge,
but the mouths of fools feed on folly.
26:11 Like a dog that returns to his vomit
is a fool that repeats his folly.
18:2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing his opinion.
28:26 He who trusts in his own mind is a fool;
but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
but a wise man listens to advice.
14:33 Wisdom abides in the mind of a man of understanding,
but it is not known in the heart of fools.

I've seen movies on TV where "goddamed" and "goddammit" became
"[silence]damned" and "[silence]dammit".
As long as they don't censor "Janet".

A spokeswoman for Atlanta-based Delta said the airline had no choice
because Miramax Films, distributor of "The Queen" shipped to airlines
only the censored version of the movie.
Then why the ***** are you bitching about the airlines censoring it? Do
you even read the crap you post?

Ah, that's because just like when you order your little "Latin" book, or
whatever the thing you like from, say - Amazon, then you GET WHAT YOU
ORDER..... Delta and frignoze airlines obviously had no intention of
offending anyone but those who worship the God whom is referred to in "God
save the Queen". I doubt a Muslim, etc. would even watch the movie, let
alone be offended by it.
There was never a situation where the unedited (for general exhibition)
version wasn't available. I guess one needs to read between the lines these
days.
Got a job as a proofreader?

Q-A-N-T-A-S.
There is a "u" in "Queen".
There is no "u" in "QANTAS".
I didn't even know "Rainman" had a circumcision scene show on other
carriers.

Well, there should be a "u". It isn't "Qeensland, Australia"
Also, the film was "Rain Man", you missed that nit, twit.

QANTAS:
Queensland
And
Nothern
Territory
Air
Service
Otherwise known as an acronym, or indeed, trade mark. Don't get me
started on people misspelling/Americanising "laser" :-)

"laser" is the correct spelling in America. We don't
spell "stimulated" with a Z.
Well, LASER would be better, but nobody seems to
capitalize this acronym anymore.

If we wanted to be truly pedantic we'd insist of SCUBA diving as
well. As laser and scuba have become ubiquitous as words in their own
right I don't think that really matters any more.
I've very, very rarely seen laser misspelled, but it does peeve me
when I do.

What part of "A spokeswoman for Atlanta-based Delta said the airline

you? Are you accusing her of lying, and if so, on what basis?
