Well she has said that George W. Bush is one of the smartest people she has
ever met. That tells you everything you need to know about her. They may
have to install a television set in the supreme courtroom, so Harriet can
place her hand on the set and receive Pat Robertsons healing prayer while
she making judicial decisions.

Just once, I wish the senators on the confirmation comittee would directly
ask a candidate if they believe in evolution.

I asked that same question in this newsgroup a while back. I was quickly
replied from one of the resident christians here, quoting the constitutions
article 6, section 3, which states that federal elective appointed
officials "shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this
Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a
Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
I have to respect that tenet, as it is also what should be my protection
from religion. However a question is not a test, it is not a requirement
for confirmation. I have no doubt that if their was a rumor that a
particular nominee was an atheist, you can be sure some senators would ask
the question "are you an atheist", and the nominee would subsequently be
rejected.

Evolution is not a religion.

Well, the answer was from one of the resident Christians that infest
the group.

But a scientific test is not a religious test, and this is a simple
question of fact, just to see how literate the candidate is. Evolution and
the big bang are neither contoversial, nor disputed, by scientists. They
are proven facts, and it is eminently reasonable to try to prove the
ignorance of a candidate by trying to show that they are ignorant in
matters of science.
In fact, having established a disbelief in evolution and the big bang, I
think that it would be quite possible to follow the trail of ignorance to a
vast litany of scientific knowledge that Christians disbelieve, merely
because they find science to difficult to grasp.
For instance, how many of these religious crackpots don't believe in DNA or
the continental drift, which are not hot button topics? Hell, it might
even open up a new age of opportunity for the literate minority who know
the answers to these questions.
Remember what a fool Dan Quayle made of himself, because he thought
somebody had built the canals on Mars? There are a lot more stupid
Republicans, waiting to be snared in the same trap, by their own ignorance.

Going in another direction, one could ask if she thought that either creationism
or intelligent design are *scientific* theories. Certainly, an affirmative
answer would be a disqualifier.
