Germany's embattled leader Gerhard Schröder last night offered
concessions to left-wing rebels within his own party ahead of a crunch
vote this Friday which could lead to his resignation and the collapse
of his government.
The German chancellor yesterday held an emergency three-hour meeting
with members of his Social Democratic party (SPD) in an attempt to
head off a revolt over his contentious plans to overhaul Germany's
welfare state.
